    Another basic newbie

Now you have done it. I have been manual machining for several years now and think (?) I am ready to step up a bit to Arduino control. Get it? Step up, a bit. In my previous life life I was an electrician/contractor who did industrial control work. No comedian, kept my day job. I attended...

    Brass Cleaner

Last can of Brasso I bought seems they left the polisher out. I suppose they changed something to make it safer so when we drink a quart of it we won't get a belly-ache. It is much thinner, does not smell the same, and just about does not work. At over $5 a can I shy from buying another...

    Entablature Steam Pumping Engine

WOW! Your work is more like art than modeling! I guess I am too much a plain old mechanic, as long as it works, looks be damned! I do grind, file, polish and paint, though. Looking forward to your future posts. :o

    Ford pulling out of Australia

When I had the pleasure of going to Sheperton (NW of Melbourne) in 1990 to do some work for my friend Burt I had the pleasure of riding in his brand new, fresh off the lot company car. Other than the steering being on the wrong side, his new little FALCON did quite well. ;D I tried to...

Best way to indicate part on rotary table?

Best way to indicate part on rotary table?

I ground a 60 deg taper on a piece of 3/4" shaft for the quill. Took an old, dead, useless drill with a good #2 morse taper to match my rotary table. Cut the drill portion off and turned a 60 deg female to a 5/8" opening. Then by lowering the quill and mateing the two the rotary is pretty...

Drill press converted to tapping machine

Shawn; Good thinking, great work. The kind of stuff I like to do given the chance. Dirty old ratty little gray drill press no one notices. Clean, bright cared for tool people will fight over just to use. I proved this many times to myself. Our shop had many 3/8" Milwaukee drills. I picked a...

    Clothespin Clamp

Modified to the bean mode, they also shot the old strike any where stick matches very well also. The type now barely light themselves. Is this what you call a safety match? I guess if it won't light you won't burn yourself. A lawyers dream come true. woohoo1

    Silver soldering/Brazing technique

Shooting buddy of mine was employed at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard. His job was sweating pipe joints with silver solder on nuclear submarines. I think I could say he was qualified. Gary gave me two of his old torches, both shop made and resemble baby rosebuds. His biggest complaint was...

    Silver soldering/Brazing technique

Ken; Thank you very much, well said. I am not sure exactly what you said. It may have been how you said it. But all the bells, whistles and lights just came on. I have talked with so many guys about this subject and I have gotton answers as wide as the Montana sky. But you nailed it, I...

Oil for a lathe headstock & apron

Have to agree. Around here chainsaw bar oil is the crud drained out of the CAT. :o MSC for one, Grainger another, can supply a lot of different lubricants. The bulk petroleum supplier in your town has or can get most anything you want. Just take him some info. Thm:

    DIY Plumber

You are a pretty sharp guy to figger all that out. Me, just too lazy and then unsure if I did! What the devil is "OLIVE ALUMINUM"?

    Silver soldering/Brazing technique

I don't know if this technique fits here but when possible I like to do the following. Use a spring loaded clamp to hold the part in place. Prior to this flux and put a very light coat of silver solder on the two pieces to be joined. File the solder as necessary to reassemble the parts...

    Airplane engines

What catagory does a simple model airplane engine fall into? Like a Cox .049? Anyone make model airplane engines, well that look like airplane engines?

    Caliper no-no

BS or not, very nearly is so much easier to remember. Like all things from noble people, time has a way of enhancing any accomplishments. My caliper shows me, for example that a piece of material is somewhere between 1" and 2". After that I use a mike. Like all the other posts show, very...
