    Howell V4 filling fluids procedure

I am almost ready to test my engine but have a few questions. Where do you fill the oil from? Also I assume the oil pump needs to be primed so what is best orientation of motor when filling and where to fill (oil gallery?) Or can I flip engine upside down and fill from oil drain pipe...

    Howell Miser Question

I'm taking a little break from the Howell V4 engine and finishing up an engine I started but never finished, the LTD Miser engine. My question is regarding the clear displacer ring. I ordered a piece from the howell website and the inside is not round. Measuring the ID in a few different...

    Howell V4 question

Posted in my "How to set up a Distributor thread", but maybe all you Howell V4 builders will see this and be able to help me out. I Need some help understanding something... In the V4 plans, on sheet #63 it shows this: The rotor viewed from top rotates clockwise. I rotated engine CCW from...

How to set up a Distributor

Before I spin the crank around to set the valve clearance, I think I should install the distributor cap while the #1 piston is at TDC (I know my cylinder numbers are labeled wrong, but I had other parts/pics referenced to it before I realized it, so kept it to avoid confusion) My question is...

    Setting Valve Clearance

This may be a dumb question but I just wanted to verify the procedure on how to set valve clearance. The Howell v4 plans says to set it to .002. To set the clearance, do I hold engine like this and find the highest point a lifter is, then use feeler gauges to set the .002 clearance? Then rotate...

    Howell V4 Distributor

This engine is my first that uses a distributor so I need some help understanding how it goes together correctly. Here is the rotor contact assembly and rotor drawing. The rotor contact assembly is superglued on rotor. It says in one of the sheets "the rotor inside the cap should clear the...

    Crosshatch

Previously I had lapped my cast iron cylinder sleeves for my Howell V4 with diamond compound and used ultrasonic cleaner to clean them after. There is a crosshatch pattern I can see but faint, because it was done with a fine lapping compound. The bores of them were lapped to .875, the piston...

    valve lapping

Still working on putting together howell v4.. Valve cages are phosphor bronze, valves are stainless steel. Made valves and seat cutter without changing compound rest angle so they both angles should match. I have a few questions: 1) What compound should I use for lapping? I have really fine...

    Piston ring gaps orientation

I'm working on assembling my howell v4 and was wondering what orientation relative to each other should the 3 rings gaps be when installing the piston in the cylinder?

Ultrasonic cleaning to remove diamond particles

My cylinder liners are cast iron (Howell V4), and I lapped them with diamond paste. I have a ultrasonic cleaner, but I'm not sure what liquid/solvent I put in the tank.

    Cast Iron piston ring gap

The way I've been doing the piston rings for the Howell V4 is I turned to .002 oversize and made sleeve and mandrel like on the JEH piston ring page. I made mandrel with cover and pin like shown in strictly IC article using specs from V4 Plans (.131 pin, .827 mandrel dia, etc I made the...

    Howell v4 engine drawing question

I was wondering if someone could help me with the piston drawing. I just want to verify I'm understanding this correctly. It shows .872" dia (top land only) on the print. It shows .873" dia at the bottom of piston. Does this mean after the first o-ring groove the diameter is .873"?
