    Modified Ridders engine

I have recently finished an engine loosely based on Jan Ridders opposed twin 4 cycle engine. I say loosely since I used the concept and converted it to decimal inches and modified it to be a 4 piston 2 cylinder on my next version. I also am not the machinist that Jan Ridders is since I...

Howell v-2 four stroke gas engine.

I am truly enjoying the build progress. Jerry Howells designs are definitely works of art and sometimes complicated for aesthetic reasons rather than functional reasons. I built the v-twin a couple of years ago and it was about my fifth engine build. I learned that I wasn't smart enough to...

Howell v-2 four stroke gas engine.

Gus, I bought my pinion wire from SDP-SI.com which is "Stock Drive Products- Sterling Instrument". I got a kick out of your comments on the carburetor build. When I finally got a good one I built another one just like the other one. Duh- now I had two of the same side carbs. Carbs and...

Howell v-2 four stroke gas engine.

Just picked up on this thread and haven't read it all but wanted to put my thoughts in. My last build was Jerry's V twin and I truly enjoyed it. It pushed my skill levels to the limits but the prints were excellent. I struggle with cutting gears since I haven't figured out how to accurately...

    Making cast iron piston rings

I think I will try Mauro's method which is basically what I proposed without the heat treat and see how it goes. I have found that as a rookie every additional step in the process adds to the FUF (foul up factor).. Next question.. In my youth I raced methanol burning two cycle outboards...

    Making cast iron piston rings

THANKS for the response. I was afraid I would get the answer I got. I was just looking for a quick and easy way to make rings. As you can tell, I hate making rings as I have not had great luck in the past. Here we go again---- guess I better start out making about 10 to start with!

    Making cast iron piston rings

I know this subject has been hashed over a million times but I have a question that I haven't been able to find an answer to. Will making a cast iron piston ring to the relaxed size od and the proper thickness (size that will fit the cylinder bore and piston when compressed with proper gap)...

    South Bend Model A 9" vs ?

After a tremendous amount of online research I figured out that the new South Bend 10K does the same stuff my old 9A does. I haven't changed gears since my old Bridgemill (another story) and I'm not willing to take a step back in features. I decided to keep the 9a till the new South Bend 10k...

    South Bend Model A 9" vs ?

Anybody know about a Smithy MI1130L. It appears to have a power crossfeed and weigh about 440 lbs. Website says the Dial Calibration on longfeed rack is .08 What in the world does that mean?. Never seen Smithy mentioned on any of the forums which must mean something. Thanks, Hogan

    South Bend Model A 9" vs ?

Really wanted a grizzley 4002 till I researched the internet on how to get it to a basement. There was talk of 4x4 skids, come alongs, and skid loaders. Too much for this old man to deal with plus a wife and a finished basement except for the shop area. Convinced me a #1000 lathe was too...

    South Bend Model A 9" vs ?

I have the itch for a new lathe and would like advice from some of the more experienced machinists. Currently I have an old well worn South Bend 9" 24" long model A that is missing all the options (steady rest, follow rest, thread dial, taper attach). It is plenty big for what I do. I am not...

    Materials for pistons

Just got the V twin running and am still debugging. The 99% of carburator problems that turn out to be electrical were actually carburator problems. Chased the wrong dog for a while. The 12L14 pistons seem to be working fine even if throttle response is a little slow.

    Materials for pistons

Thanks for the great responses. Sorry for the slow response from me But I travel in a 5th wheel about four months a year and have been gone. Plus in the summer I don't do a lot in the shop. Not to question Jerry's wonderful designs, I think I will be using cast iron to start. The reason for...

    Materials for pistons

I am building a Howell V-Twin and I am at the piston and ring stage. Has anybody made their pistons with 12L14. The prints call for cast iron cylinders, rings and pistons.

odds and ends hit and miss engine

What a shame its out of print. There are some sites that say you can download it for free but they look a little risky and I don't know what the copyright laws would think of it. It is a great book, I have built the odds and ends, and the six cycle engines and they run beautifully. I also built...
