    Low spot on milled surface?

I'm pretty sure there weren't any chips between the block and vise (I always wipe before clamping). The vise is a screwless and I've found it to have good accuracy. I didn't have to use parallels. The tram on my mill isn't perfect, but it's as close as I can get it with shims. Currently it's out...

    Low spot on milled surface?

I milled a face on a 2.5"x3.5"x1.5" block of 1018 steel and a 3/16"x3.5"x1.5" 1018 steel plate. The two milled faces will be fastened together. I used a 5/16" HSS end mill at 1,100 RPM, 7"/min feed, lubricated with Boelube paste. When I checked fitment of the plate to the block I noticed a...

Best way to match an existing diameter?

Thanks for the help. Things turned out pretty well using emery cloth for the last little bit. The work was for this project: http://benchtopmachineshop.blogspot.com/2015/01/lathe-z-axis-fine-adjustment.html

Survey on Sieg 7" lathe - Bazmak

I agree with the other posters here, that you really want the prism locating the carriage and not the back edge of the bed. However, the carriage gibs need to be adjusted well for the prism to do its job. While tapered gibs would be great, I went a cheaper and easier route which has worked...

Reducing Mini-Mill Column Flex (and Column Y-Axis Alignment)

Thanks for the very detailed answer! Once you've finished the 80% receiver, how much more does it cost to buy the additional parts to build a complete AR-15?

Bazmak diary of a sieg SX 2 bench mill

The large table is ideally set up for a DIY power feed. I made mine (which I'm very happy with) for about $50 worth of parts from Amazon: http://benchtopmachineshop.blogspot.com/2014/06/mill-power-feed.html Regarding the DRO, just buy 2 12" iGaging digital scales and a 6" iGaging scale and...

    X2 Mini Mill Mods

Have you considered upgrading to the LMS solid column and base, and getting rid of the stupid pivot entirely? It does cost $250, but I did it and am so happy I did. http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=4307...

Reducing Mini-Mill Column Flex (and Column Y-Axis Alignment)

Thanks for the update! If you don't mind me asking, how much does it cost to go from an 80% to a finished AR? It's a project I'd love to do sometime soon, but would like to know the total, finished cost. The other project I want to do very, very badly is an 80% 1911 frame. However, those...

Indexable tool bits for mini lathe

They're both 3/8" but they hold the inserts in different orientations.

Indexable tool bits for mini lathe

I'm aware of the upsides to using HSS and grinding my own, and used to do so. However, I don't have a lot of free time and I'd rather spend it using the lathe than grinding tool bits for it. However, I think I will try one of the HSS inserts which are available for my new set.

Indexable tool bits for mini lathe

Thank you very much for the suggestions. I ended up going with the LMS set and have already gotten a lot of use out of them. Now I just need to by QCTP holders for all of them...

    mini lathe cross slide gibs

I finally got around to modifying my lathe gibs the same as my mill gibs. I basically milled flat pockets for the set screws to seat against in the stock gibs. This keeps the gib at a 60 degree angle for optimal contact with the dovetail. I also added two extra set screws on both the compound...

Best way to match an existing diameter?

I have a project I'm working on, and I'm not sure what the best way to perform this operation would be. Hopefully someone can tell me a better way to do it. I have a long shaft who's end have a 1" long bearing surface which rides inside a bronze bearing. I have welded an extension onto the...

Indexable tool bits for mini lathe

There seem to be two different indexable tool bit sets common made for the mini lathe: 1. http://www.grizzly.com/products/T10436 2. http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1669 The tool bit shanks are different between the two sets. Sooooooo, which one should I...

Bazmak diary of a sieg SX 2 bench mill

I also use TouchDRO on both my mill and lathe, and just frequently added tachometers to both. The tachs also run through TouchDRO and allow it to do cool things like calculate chip load. I'm extremely happy with it and can't recommend it enough. Also, what other DRO do you know of which can play...

    Plastic safe threadlocker?

If you check the MSDS sheet it's basically just blue colored Krazy Glue.

    Plastic safe threadlocker?

I'm working on a project where I have small metal screws going into nuts embedded in a plastic body. I don't want to use a normal threadlocker like the blue Loctite since I won't be able to keep it off the plastic as I assemble the two parts. I've done some research into plastic safe options for...

    PC based DRO?

The mill just received a tachometer courtesy of TouchDRO: http://benchtopmachineshop.blogspot.com/2014/10/mill-arduino-dro-tachometer.html Also, the lathe received the TouchDRO treatment as well: http://benchtopmachineshop.blogspot.com/2014/10/lathe-arduino-touchdro.html
