Welcome! Seems a lot of people choose a wobbler engine for a first project. A finger engine is another way to dip your toes in the pool. An internet search will turn up plans for either. Craig

    Hi from Quebec, Canada

Hi Ronny: Welcome from Ontario. If you are looking for starter projects, you might consider a 'wobbler' engine. (Search for "wobbler engine plans".) You can make them as simple or fancy as you desire. Another option is a 'finger' engine. (Neither of the above are mine; just random...

Aladdin's cave of machines to dispose of - help needed

So there is nobody in the family that is interested in hobby machining? Or in any of the models the man made? Is the objective to maximize the amount of money from the sale? Or to clear everything out as quickly as possible? Or something else? Selling each machine and tool, one by one, is...

    Press Fits

That is a beautiful tool set but the minimum size it will measure is 0.8 inches. The OP's application was a 5/8" hole. Craig

    Press Fits

Supposing a '5/8 inch' hole, how does one measure it with tenths accuracy (0.0001")? Can you get gauge pins in increments of a tenth? In a controlled manufacturing situation, I suppose you would have Go/NoGo gauges for the exact press fit requirements of the application? What do these 'feel'...

    Taking it up a step---

What device are you getting, exactly? A 3-prong hole micrometer? A 2-pin mic that can measure on the inside or outside? Or a bore micrometer? Something else? Craig

I have to sell my workshop!

Around here, online auctions have really surged. The auctioneer takes something like 30% off the top but takes all the photos, adds descriptions, and manages the process including pickup day. With good photos and detailed descriptions, prices tend to be really high so the seller gets a good...

    4140 pre-hard

An aside, but my impression is that D2 would typically be a fair bit more expensive than 4140. No? Maybe somebody with good 'McMaster-Carr' fu could verify? Craig

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Annealing a hardened piece of O1 shouldn't be difficult. It needs to get slightly above critical temperature (non-magnetic) and stay there for a little while (minutes with a small piece like this). It probably cooled too rapidly in the air. Another old timers solution is to bury the hot piece...

HSS Lathe Tool Shapes and Angles

I would not bother grinding left hand tools until you need them. Cutting from left to right--away from the headstock--is just not common. Or do you have something specific that will require such a tool? Craig

HSS Lathe Tool Shapes and Angles

When I was starting out, I found the following page a really good and concise summary of how to grind a usable HSS tool: http://steves-workshop.co.uk/tips/toolgrinding/toolgrinding.htm Note that there is a 1-page pdf that you can print out and keep handy for reference. There are tonnes of...

    Hardening with Kasenit - advice?

There was a Youtube video recently where the guy tried to work out a home-workshop process for case hardening. Might give you some pointers: Craig

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Not something that I know anything about but...is differential expansion any concern? What kind of running temperature do you expect for the engine? Are the thermal expansion rates of aluminum and cast iron different enough to make create an issue? Is the epoxy bond elastic enough to cope? Craig

There is still the option of R&D Bandsaws in Brampton: https://tufftooth.com Brampton is about an hours drive, right? You could be doing curb side pick-up tomorrow morning! ;) Craig

    Gamage lathe

Are you both referring to south-western Ontario? I briefly dated a girl from Chepstow, ON back in the mists of time. My hometown is Lucknow, ON. Craig
