Jason, Maybe. I think though that the judging creates an atmosphere or expectation of excellence. We tend to run what we brung. I'm also surprised at the number of engines on static display and wonder how many of them ever ran.

I wonder if part of the difference in Quality is due to the English judge the entries and award prizes. The judging may include a critique.

Just a thought. I superglue the lobes in position till I'm sure I like them and then pin them. Comes apart easy if need be and they don't seem to slip.

Appreciate your problem. But consider you are going to invest hundreds of hours in your build and you don't want to end up with an inferior engine because you scrimped on proper materials. Just my thoughts.

Seems to me someone posted a way to use rubber automotive vacuum hose fittings (Dorman?) to make boots on some forum in the recent past.

That's the wire I used and it is very nice.

FWIW-I built a modified Hoglet and found that my usual electric starter motor would not turn it at a 4:1 ratio. I ended up finding a larger motor. The Hoglet has a smaller bore and a lower compression ratio too. Look forward to your experience with a planetary gearbox solution!

Since we are away from machining stuff I thought of something I did with my kids when they were little. I grew tomatoes and horn worms were a real pest. I found they enjoyed shooting them with a BB gun with no BBs. The air blast alone was effective

I built a Hermes engine with a float/needle valve carb. The plan called for the float to be made from.004" brass shim stock. Worked OK but only with a Vinton tipped needle.
