    ETW Sealion

Hi weldsol, Very interested in your work, I started making the sealion from castings some 20 years ago and finally finished it about 18 months ago and got it running. The castings were rubbish but I persevered and managed to finish with modification to overcome the poor quality of the castings...

    Small casting (alluminium) aty home.

Reminds me of quite a few yeas ago I had a car yard and during the colder days, we'd lit a fire in a large dustbin. One day (just to see what would happen) I threw an air cooled VW crank case in. I didn't know about magnesium. Anyway it sent us running as burning incendiary bits rained down. I...

    Tim4 ignition

Hi Dsage, Thanks so much for you input, I didn't know about the current limiting on the batteries, I have also used the COP 's but the Audi type, I think the Ford ones are a lot smaller once the extention has been removed but haven't found any for the right price (dirt cheap) Once again thanks...

    Tim4 ignition

Hi Dsage, All points noted thanks. BTW my coil is about 1.2 ohms. Although some of the smaller coils (used for dirtbikes etc) are below the 1 ohm mark, so would definitely require a ballast. Resistor.

    Tim4 ignition

Thanks Dsage, I did add a ballast resistor and it did drop the temperature a bit, I think dropping the voltage to 6vdc will probably sort it. Thanks for your help all. Graham

OK Blujets, Yes, already put cap on he Hall leads. Thanks I'll try your circuit next. Keep safe Graham

    Tim4 ignition

Hi all, Just to avoid confusion, the circuit I'm using is from the 5 bears circuits and it appears that the circuit I'm using is what people are calling Tim 6 but my printout calls it a TIM 4 TIP42C, 2N2907, etc

Hi Steve, Would be interested which CDI circuit you are using. Graham

    Tim4 ignition

Hi blujets, You're right, but the comments (I believe by the designer) said he used 12vdc and standard auto coil. I have used the MJ Darlington but only a points version not with a Hall switch. Thanks anyway. Circuit for MJ would be good. Graham

    Tim4 ignition

Good point Dave, but already has large aluminium plate attached with compound, that should be "overkill" really, but I like to be safe. Thanks anyway.

    Tim4 ignition

Anyone had problems with this circuit. I built lots of different ignition systems over the years but just needed something simple for a converted strimmer motor so built the TIM4. It works fine but T1 gets quite hot (too hot) I've built a couple of them with same results. Any ideas? 12vdc and...

Small heat treat or ceramic oven and toolpost grinder

Hi Mike that's the method I use. I've used this Trimble method on Westburys Sea lion, Kiwi several Nemett 15's plus a few others. To cleave the ring I just grip the ring with 2 pairs of flat nose pliers (close together) and tweek. I 've made maybe 50 rings this way. And by the way all the...

A new attempt at making piston rings

Dsage is right, you have to start with the right diameter I.e. fits the cylinder perfectly, before any heat treatment or splitting.

    The great O ring discussion

I too have used the Trimble method with good results, making 3-4 rings in a stack Many seem to worry about the cleaving but I have found by griping the ring with 2 pairs of flat nose pliers (right next to each other) and just bending slightly i get a clean break every time. Clean and gap with...

Hi Brian, I too would like to have purchase details of your plans for this engine.

    Old School Barstock 2 Stroke

Hi Brian, I'm surprised you lapped the crankshaft into a bronze sleeve. I was told that if you did this, the carborundum paste would embed itself into the Bronze making itself into a lap permanently, thereby wearing the crankshaft in no time. Of course as always I stand to be corrected. Good...

    Nice coil and ignition

Hi every one, I have just received 3 of these units ( very cheap at £5 delivered) and have wired it up to my existing home made transistor system (not the one mentioned in this thread) and an can confirm it does work, although the spark was not as good as either a normal 12 v car coil...
