    Cast Iron Boring Head

What kind of tool steel would you recommend? A2? My thinking on cast iron was based strictly on price. For example 1.5" diameter rods 12" long cost me: 4140: $30 12L14: $30 1018: $25 A2: $57 P20: $62 Cast Iron: $17 Mosey: Looking at those prices, maybe I should just buy a cheap import. :-\

    Cast Iron Boring Head

Hi all, One of the projects I'm going to tackle is building a boring head for my mill. I'm planning to use Steven Campbell's design. I can get cast iron in ~1.5" size cheaper and easier than mild steel. Would it be suitable for such a thing? My thought is that since machines are made from it...

    A Table Engine Tale

Wow - that really looks like it was cast! This whole thing is fantastic. And I, for one, love the pictures.

    My Bit Of Basement

Thanks Rick. That would be my trusty old oscilloscope, retired from a school about six years ago. Needed a bit of repair, but works very well now.

    New guy, first build

I think black contrasting with the bright metal would look stunning. Maybe a hammered finish paint.

    Interesting tool bit setter

I personally use a hunk of steel that rests on the bed of the machine as a tool bit setter. It works very well and very quickly. I think that this item is a novelty. I like novelties. I might have to make one just or fun sometime.

Congratulations on completing a very spiffy looking engine! Are you planning to make a set of drawings?

    Digital Camera Help

If the camera has the ability to manually focus, that could be it. I had a camera that would set itself to manual focus, and then I would wonder why the camera wouldn't focus on anything!

    Which mill??

The taig is a very nice mill. And as far as tooling is concerned, it comes with an ER headstock, so you just need tooling with a straight shank. I don't own one, but have spent some time using one. The machine is very rigid for its size, and very accurate (for a mill of any size). It's a quality...

    Another Comber / Coomber build

Very nice! I'm astounded that such an engine can run on breath power. A gorgeous build, thanks so much for sharing it with us!

    Interesting tool bit setter

Here's a lathe bit height gauge I saw on ebay this morning. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lathe-Tool-Centering-Gage-Bit-Height-Setting-Leveling-/260897080551?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cbead84e7 Looks like something that could be replicated fairly easily. A clever idea, certainly, but my question...

    Indicator Holder

Hello all, I've been wanting a better indicator holder for my mill for a while. I have a cheap Indicol clone, and it's really just garbage. So I set out to make my own. The main inspiration for this build was when I found this little pivoting dovetail holder. It's a little grimy, but it had...

    My Bit Of Basement

Thanks. John -- I do a fair bit of robotics work, as well as the odd audio project (amps, pedals, repairs). I also do a bit of development on 3D printing, so the ability to tweak and modify control electronics is handy.

    My Bit Of Basement

Hello all, It being Thanksgiving, I've been off school. My original plan was to hunker down and build a boring head, but I had no stock. I turned to any number of other projects, only to realize that I had no sock for any of those! So what to do? Clean. And since my shop was clean, I figured it...

Looking 3-4" lathe chuck with 2 piece jaws?

It looks like they have a service department just pertaining to chuck sales. Might be worth a try. http://www.tos.cz/indexan.php?stranka=kontakty
