Electronic Dividing Head using the Arduino

Looks really nice so far Chuck. The stepper board you're looking at sounds like a Pololu driver. Is that the case? The A4988 version is quite good (certainly good enough for a dividing head), and really difficult to kill. By which I mean the short protection actually works. I tried it. I'm not...

    Long Work

Good idea on the sleeve, but I'm not sure how to center the work so far from the headstock. Also, you're very right that I wouldn't end up with enough room between centers. Hrm. Finding someone with a larger lathe would be convenient, but I don't think I know anyone nearby with a large lathe...

    Long Work

Hello all, It's been a while since I've been around here. Good to see you again. I've got a bit of a problem at the moment. I need to machine an axle. It's 36" long, keyed down the length, and threaded at the ends. I need it to be 30" long, which brings me to my problem. I have a 10x36 lathe...

    Example of 3D Printing

The $1500 reprap is a rip-off. Don't get it. I've been working on a printer recently that I think is the best thing out there right now (of course, I'm biased, since I work on it). It's the ORD bot platform, from buildlog.net. However, I have used and do use many other printers. Right now, if...

When it makes sense to spend the $$....

A while ago enco started having a perpetual sale on Atrax end mills. A while ago I started buying Atrax end mills. The difference in quality between those and my cheap imports is amazing. And as much as I like the price of the chinese cutters, I just can't go back.

Making a Miniature Cubic Zirconia Gem Steam Machine

That is going to be so cool. I can't wait. I would love to see more pictures of the techniques for stonework.

Centering Parts On A Rotary Table

Mike: I have a sacrificial backing, maybe I'll just make a jig. Since I need to make a few, that would make sense. Marv: That would make sense, but I need to hold fairly tight tolerance and don't feel that confident in doing that kind of positioning (being without a DRO and all that). Also, I...

Centering Parts On A Rotary Table

Thanks for that. I'm making some panels that need to have a perfect finish, so I think I'll go for the scribed lines.

    Great News!

Nice! I was talking to one of my mentors, and he mentioned that you were in his lab. Bob Parks says hello. Small world.

    Jim builds his second v-8

Looking really nice. I can't wait to hear it run. Also, I noticed your drawing textbook in the background. I use the same one!

Centering Parts On A Rotary Table

Hi all, I need to cut some radii on the ends of some stainless pieces, which means I get to use my new rotary table! Yay! The piece is 5" x 1" x 0.075". I need to cut a 0.5" radius on the ends, and there's no hole under the center. Any tips for getting the piece centered? I recall reading about...

    Captive nut

I made one a couple months ago. Still can't stop fiddling with it.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

    Re: TB5 proposal

I do quite a lot of development work on your low-end 3D printers. I have them built to out-perform some of those $30K ones. The point being, it can be done, and without too much effort if you're careful and pick the right design to start with. But that's a side-note. If you're interested, PM me...

Rotary Table -- What Do I Need To Know?

Well, the table is all set to arrive today. Fortunately, I'll be at school, so the UPS man is safe. ;D Trout -- I'll probably dismantle it in the process of cleaning. We'll find out if there's any gunk. Bogs -- A lifetime of experience, just like anything else, I guess. I have some small...

Rotary Table -- What Do I Need To Know?

Robin -- I'll certainly let you know how mine works out. There seems to be a bit of variation in products like these; hopefully I get a good one. Thanks for the heads-up on the crank handle also. I think I'll be building a storage box for it and I'll take that into account.

Rotary Table -- What Do I Need To Know?

Marv -- Good idea. I'll see if there's any in the junk box at the hackerspace. kvom -- I suppose I should find out what size the T-Nuts are. It also happens that my 4-jaw chuck has bolt holes through the faceof it so I can bolt it on to the rotab directly. Convenient.

Rotary Table -- What Do I Need To Know?

Thanks Marv. I guess now I have to try turning a morse taper. I also may give a tooling plate like the one ShopShoe made a go. (http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=16077.0) I've read a bit about needing to fill the gearbox with oil -- do I need to do that? And if so, what...

Rotary Table -- What Do I Need To Know?

Hi all, As a present to myself I decided to get a 6" H/V Phase II rotary table. It's in the mail, and my ears are tuned to the frequency of the UPS truck. But that's beside the point. What do I need to know (or get/make)? I've used a rotary table once in my life, and it wasn't even my setup, so...

    Saw stop debate.

High school dtudents being dumb doesn't make the saw stop a bad idea. It just means that no one has been able t use the table saw at my school for the last couple months.
