What have you been doing today?

I had one of those cognitive tests, had the same trouble with remembering the question 10 minutes later. I also have the common problem with putting things down in the workshop and then not being able to find them - I blame malicious invisible elves... The long-term memory being better than...

Sources for steam engine packing material

Do labyrinth seals work on engines powered by compressed air ? I'm building a Kennions 'Tina'. The piston (about 1" dia) and cylinder are both gunmetal. How much clearance should I allow between cylinder and piston for a labyrinth seal ?

    Unsatisfied !?

In the programming department I inhabited these were known as 'Stiffies'. Caused a good few raised eyebrows amongst non-computer-literate colleagues...

    Inexpensive (cheap) Surface Plate

I thought you had to lap three things together in order to ensure they were truly flat ?

    Myford oiler - advice needed

I have one of these. It works fine but, as you say, the top ring is junk - with what did you replace it ?

'Plastic Wood' equivalent for gunmetal ?

Looks like JB is the best choice then, thanks all.

'Plastic Wood' equivalent for gunmetal ?

I'm looking for the equivalent of Plastic Wood to fill small holes in gunmetal castings. Some of the holes are machined surfaces (oops). Is there a one-part equivalent for metal ? and will it need the machined surfaces to be etched for adhesion ? Colour is unimportant as it will be part of a...

A bit of a long-shot, but would it be worth trying swapping the camshafts ?

Almost burned my shop down and didn't even know it

When I was first married (50 years ago) My wife and I kept pet guinea-pigs running loose in the kitchen. All was well until the refrigerator failed. On investigating it, I found that all the wiring underneath had lost its insulation, eaten by the guinea-pigs. It turns out that guinea-pigs, like...

Almost burned my shop down and didn't even know it

Make sure you have a alternative route out in case of fire. My workshop is split into two rooms, woodwork and metalwork, with a fire-resistant wall and door between them. The usual entrance is via the woodwork end, but I have a external door, secured by bolts inside, in in the metalwork end in...

Almost burned my shop down and didn't even know it

I have a several Big Red Buttons which, when pressed, instantly isolate all the sockets in the workshop, leaving only the lights on. So far I've only used it to make sure everything is inert when children are visiting.

Almost burned my shop down and didn't even know it

In the UK we have 3-pin sockets rated at 240V 13A each. In my workshop I have ring main with a number of twin sockets on the walls. The year before last's winter I had two electric heaters, an oil-radiator type and a fan heater, both rated at 12A, on at the same time in the same twin-socket...

    Myford Oil Gun replacement

My ancient Myford oil gun has finally got to the point where it leaks more than it pumps, so I need a replacement. I've never been keen on the Myford item, it leaked from day one. Can anyone suggest a (not too expensive) non-leaking alternative ? TIA

    Making a model Cannon

See if you can find a copy of "Scale Model Cannon History Design Construction" by Richard Stewart and Donald Heyes, ISBN 0 7195 3888 2. It includes plans for a variety of different cannons from various eras. I built a Mortar from it, came out reasonably well.

What have you been doing today?

... To be clear, charging for hospital parking doesn't apply to the whole of the UK - it's free in Wales and (I think) Scotland. Just as well considering how often I (in Wales) seem to be visiting them these days...

    V-TWIN---MAYBE V-4

I'm curious - why not silver-solder the tank-ends as well ? Do ferrous metals and brass not stick together when silver-soldered ?

For Sale Late 1960s early 1970s Stuart Casting Kits

Stuart-Turner will sell you the drawings separately. My son found an old (1950's ?) set of 10H castings whilst clearing a shed, and S-T sold me the drawings for UKP 16 a couple of months ago.

Make small glow plug for diesel engine : Is it possible ?

Both my 1960's Ford 3000 tractors had this, and they would start in any weather, provided the battery was in good condition.
