Hi Peter.
On the plans there's a little rectangular item just labeled "Nut" that you have to make - that is the nut that fits into the slot on the top of the valve, and the valve rod screws into it. If I recall correctly, Elmer specified the thread on that nut as "Close".
If you click on the...
Thanks Dave :) - making that tooling plate has proven to be some of the best time I've spent on tool building. It does need a couple of accessories though - eccentric clamps for holding down thin workpieces and so on. And fences - when I built it Marv suggested those, and for work like this it...
Double thanks Ken ;) ; "lookenpeepers" - I like that term ;D
I got a call on Thursday; the brass stock I'd ordered a couple of weeks ago had arrived. Went to fetch it on Friday - two 2m lengths of stock well wrapped in shrink wrap... When I opened it at home yesterday evening, it was two...
Thanks Brian :) - Great tip on the leather Thm:; I've used leather strips with "Brasso" on them to polish up small flywheel spokes. I have some 40mm machine gun casings as well - five of them; I want to make "shot glasses" with them, but the "shots" might be a tad too big ;D
Stan, thanks :) - I...
Thank you Jim :) - sound's like I've set up some expectations to meet for myself then :big:
:) Thanks Jan. Yes, there are always many ways to do things - I tend to go for methods that are fairly straight forward to set up and does not waste too much raw material... The calculation errors will...
A very nice runner Jan Thm: Congratulations :)
Don't worry about doing it up; it looks great as is, and bling can wait for future engines.
Kind regards, Arnold
PS: I just edited your link to show the video in your thread
So what's the use of building little engines ?
;D One use is entertainment while cooking dinner ;D
'Scuse the background noises; Shrek the parrot insisted on having a bit of a say.
The Lamina - it's a bit of a heavy drinker - not of own choice, but I've forced about 3 liters of meths down...
A bit of progress today. The build is now on the fiddly parts stage - making up all the linkages and so on. On plans these look easy, but they take a lot of time to make - for a good runner they need a good bit of accuracy.
The plans mostly call for 1/16" (1.6mm) brass plate for many of the...
Hi Ryan
I agree 100% with John - having gone through this exact process myself in the last 3 years.
For starters on a lathe - check what the lathe comes with as standard and add as needed:
3 jaw self centering chuck
4 jaw independent chuck - indispensable IMHO
Magnetic base and dial indicator...
:( - and What Ken said.
Normally you should not have top rake on threading tools - as technically it will change the thread angle a bit. For home/hobby threading that shouldn't matter though as the angle is negligible.
From your photo, it looks like your threading tool is not honed sharp...
DeadLatheOwner, unfortunately I had to remove the images you posted after my previous post - while they were fun to look at, they are copyrighted, and cannot be used for public display here.

Most likely with castings or forgings and manual hand tool work. Machines are a convenience of the Industrial Revolution.
Our ancestors weren't quite as lazy as we are today, and often-time were prepared to labour for many hours with very basic hand tools to build a machine. Spade drills to...
Thanks Brian - & it's a pleasure :)
Stew, thank you :) Hmmm... Sounds like we might be in for another Potty Engineering special; I can't wait ;D
::) Well, zero progress for me today; I felt in an extremely lazy mood today - so rather than go to the shop and build junk parts, I just lazed...
This morning I awoke to the phone ringing - with a sagging heart I thought it's one of my work sites that have a problem, but that soon turned to joy. It was my dad informing me that I'm now the owner of a well-kitted tool & cutter grinder - Thanks Dad !! I just have to figure out a way to get...
