    Dot and Stews African Adventure

Looks like you enjoyed your holiday closer to my neck of the woods savannah Stew Thm: If you didn't see a rhino it's a pity; that would mean you missed seeing the "big 5" by just one animal - though the rhinos are a bit scare and are all getting poached to extinction. At least the Serengeti...

Made my vise stop today !!

Good going V45 Thm: You'll find it's useful even for making a single part that requires position changes or removal from the vise between machining steps (e.g. for de-burring or work on another machine) Kind regards, Arnold

    Kiwi Mk2 Engine

On the fiddly bits now Vince ;D - Good going! I agree with your thinking; even the physical plan supports that. Kind regards, Arnold

Does anybody sell model (I.C) v4 to v12 engines, exept Conley precision?

Hi Ian I'm sure Dave meant by "a tight bunch" that we are a lot of people bonded together through our passion for home model engineering - not "up-tightness". I know for a fact that Dave welcomes new members to our group and is willing to bust his own chops to help newcomers. The rules for the...

    A portable engine

Hi Rich I think that would be just dandy for optimum performance without any compensation for lead or lap. Maybe it might be better to add a bit of meat (0.1mm) to the wall thickness on the port side walls - i.e. make the length of the valve 12.1mm and the length of the recess 11.9mm - but...

    Newby from the New Forest

Welcome to HMEM Gerry wEc1 I guess "Hants" is a local short form for "Hampshire" then... Kind regards, Arnold

    A portable engine

Hi Rich That's correct. For a simple slide valve, the wall thickness on the port sides are also a fraction wider than the ports themselves to prevent connecting the inlet steam directly to the exhaust while opening. Kind regards, Arnold

    Gland Boss and Nut

::) Whoops - sorry; my bad; It should have been 0.05mm not 0.5mm - I got the imperial bit right... You blokes might just end up converting me to imperial still ;) Edited the previous post to correct it. Kind regards, Arnold

    Gland Boss and Nut

Hi Brian, like Jan mentioned the threads must be very concentric. The ideal way would be to single-point turn the threads in both the boss and on the packing nut - but many people seem to have a fear of single-point threading, or are simply not equipped to do it while making them. In some...

    Elmer's #32 - Tall Vertical Open Column

Brian, yes, I've been drooling a bit over your yellow 'rod  - I love 'rods and would love to own one. A two-tone '37 Chevy in dark blue and silver would do me just fine; this one would be a good starting point for me, but with different rims and the silver added... I didn't know some of...

    Elmer's #32 - Tall Vertical Open Column

Thank you Ed  - I'm glad that you found my posts useful; that adds additional satisfaction to having a finished engine :) Brian, Thank you . I think when Elmer designed this engine, it was his intention to showcase the Watts straight-line motion linkages. And when the engine's running...

    Bench grinder recommendation

Hi Bustedbricks First off, welcome to HMEM It would be greatly appreciated if you could post an introduction in the "Welcome" section of the forum - That really helps members to put a perspective on where in the world you are, what experience you have, and how best to try and help you when you...

    RUBY KOUHOUPT MARINE ENGINE

What Tin & Dave said Don - A nice engine you can be proud of  The "stuff" will happen; the first engine I built got knocked over accidentally and now has a wonky flywheel :( - unfortunately one can not do much about accidents happening. If an engine is damaged, it's sad, but that's better...
