I am waiting for the longer scales to become available before I mount mine on my x2. 6" just isn't enough X travel for me.

    Nice tool from a mistake...

A couple of questions regarding your dovetail cutter Paolo. Did you cut the majority of the material with an endmill then use the dovetail cutter only on the actual dovetail portion? How fast were you running the cutter? How deep were you cutting? A good dovetail cutter isn't cheap and it's...

Machinability of 6061 versus 5083 Aluminum

5083 is marine grade, great for corrosion resistance but not the easiest stuff to machine. If you are just drilling holes in it you won't have too much trouble but if you need an easy machining alloy like 6061 this ain't it.

No pics of my shop yet...

but this is just as exciting I think... I am posting this from the shop. I rehabilitated my wife's old castoff laptop and ran a cable out to my retreat so I can easily access all my important sites! It's going to be nice to step back from a project, take a break and catch up on the posts! Not...

How do I pack a toolholder?

It means adding shims under the tool to cause it to sit higher in the holder. Strips cut from of soda cans or aluminum foil work well.

    More free flywheels

It's definitely good to have friends in the right places! Any idea where we are on the longer DRO scales for the Grizzly units?

    New Venture

I nominate Matt for the next POTM. A little engine that looks nice on a shelf is okay, but this guy is making things that will change lives! Matt, my hat is off to you!

    Question for Websterz

Yes, I am using the 12v rail to power the drill motor. Here is a video of the set-up in action. http://s797.photobucket.com/albums/yy258/websterzdesign/?action=view&current=100_0471.flv&newest=1

    Question for Websterz

The PS I used was a 350 watt model. I added a 10 ohm resistor on the 5 volt rail to give a constant load, and then for good measure I also installed a 12 volt 1 amp LED as a power on indicator. Going instantly from forward to reverse will trip out my rig too, I just learned to be careful and not...

Truing up a block in the mill

Interesting tool Bogs...never seen one like that before. I have always used the Vargus roto-burr type deburring tool. They work great until the blade snaps and the ragged broken edge slices RIPS your hand open. :o

    Natutral gas torch?

What would be involved in changing a large propane torch (the weed burner/ice melter kind) over to use natural gas? It seems like such a torch would be good for dumping large volumes of heat into a part without the hassle of using propane tanks or bottles. Plus my shop is already plumbed for gas.

I want to give you all some advice.

Thank you all so much for the prayers and kind words. I talk to my mom and dad every day on the phone (they are 3 hours away) and he is already making AMAZING progress! My mom works with him several times a day and he has remastered the alphabet, days of the week, months of the year, and other...

I want to give you all some advice.

Those of you who are fortunate enough to have a mentor, be it a father, grandfather, uncle, whatever, do not take them for granted. My father has worked with his hands his whole life, a self taught welder and machinist with skills that rival anyone I have ever met. He will turn 74 this July and...

    Soldering Hearth / Brazing Hearth

I can't see how you WOULDN'T benefit from a turntable. Anything that eases access to all sides of a workpiece is a bonus in my book. Go for it! Todd

    How much in the chuck

I wouldn't personally do it without at least a half inch of material to hold. The more the better actually as you can easily deform the scroll if you apply too much pressure on just the ends of the jaws by grabbing very short lengths of material.
