    Mini Lathe Caution

It looks like a fairly clean break. If you have the room I would suggest cutting a steel sleeve to shrink fit on the outside, pressing the two halves back together. Chill the cast parts in the freezer, heat the sleeve with a torch and press them together.

    Tangential Diamond Tool Holders

Very nicely done! I have more fun building tooling than I do actually making parts. And seat-of-the-pants engineering is the best part!! I am going to kinda'-sorta' copy your grinding fixture as I have not built one for my tangential cutter yet.

    X2 Minimill DC Drive Failure

Good on ya' Tony! I have replaced the rec's on both my x2 mill and my 7x12 lathe, and I keep spares on hand for both as well. Sure feels good being able to get going again on the cheap ,eh?

    Magnetic Clamp

In cross-section I don't believe there is enough mass to really securely hold a knife blade magnetically. I grind a lot of small parts on my surface grinder and the thinner they are the less they seem to hold. I have to use metal packing strap pieces to dam the parts in otherwise they will slip...

Things That Bolt onto the Lathe Bed

If you are worried about dings then cut the vee oversized and cover the contact faces with brass strips attached with countersunk screws. For that matter aluminum would work too. Just make sure to not get any embedded chips.

    Milling Dovetails

Cut as much of the material out as you can with an endmill then use the dovetail cutter just for the angled bits. When using a dovetail cutter I like to make one climb cut as a finished tool pressure pass, just to make things nice and neat.

Good info, thanks for posting it! Karma point for you! ;D

My take on the tangential tool holder.

Yep, 12 and 12 seems to be the magic combination. :)

My take on the tangential tool holder.

I have been meaning to make one of these for quite some time now. My earlier attempts were less than stellar performers and I knew I could do better. Here it is sitting atop my homemade QCTP. THe holder is made from 7075 T6 aluminum, the bit is a piece of Rex AAA 5/16" square held in place with...

Just watched "The Rite" w/Anthony Hopkins.

Great movie if you haven't seen it! Not a lot of bad language and no real gore, but just a good psychological thriller.

Turning small long shafts on big lathe?

You need to fashion a follower rest, it will come in handy more often than you'd expect, especially doing model engine parts. Frank Ford has built a nice version here: http://www.frets.com/HomeShopTech/Tooling/MiniFollower/minifollower.html

    Weird Stuff---

No...it is clearly an adjustable stand for a life-sized inflatable doll. Draw your own conclusions about the "humungous rod" comment. :big:

    Clamp Knurler

Nicely done Chuck! There is nothing I can think of that it more gratifying than making one's own tooling, and having it actually work. ;D
