Getting Started: Need New Mini Lathe

Hi, I bought a Sieg SC4 like Bazmak but my opinion is diametrically opposed to his. I found it to be a badly designed, badly constructed piece of rubbish. The point of this is that different people have different expectations and you really shouldn't rely on what other people say. It's...

    Flywheel made from caster

Hi, Be careful with cast iron casters. Years ago I was refurbishing an old (1900?) chair which had casters on the back two legs. The axles were rusted in so I was working on one of them to free it when it exploded like a hand grenade with shrapnel going in all directions. I wouldn't place...

    D bits

Hi, I've had success making reamers as described in this video by clickspring, the clock guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rwl-e_KI4U I used silver steel which I hardened without annealing. They are relatively easy to make and use. Regards, Alan C.

    finish when turning

Hi Bill, The normal diamond tool holder uses a 1/4" square section piece of tool steel. (First photo). I replaced it with a piece of 1/4" round tool steel ground to the same angle as the square tool using the guide. (Second photo). The orientation of the tool to the work is shown in...

Nose thread on early BSO dividing head.

Hi John, It sounds like you've got a dividing head like mine. Apart from the protective plastic cap, the only thing I've got that will fit the front thread is an old 4 jaw chuck I bought second hand years ago. It is marked: Made in the USA Buck Tool Co. Kalamazoo 444 I presume it...

    Marine Engine Plans

Hi again, The website containing the pdf Jason posted is this: http://www.vapeuretmodelesavapeur.com/telechargements4/ Not speaking French I'd never come across it before. It is a real treasure trove of plans and well worth a visit. Regards, Alan C.

    Marine Engine Plans

Thanks Jason. It's interesting how he has replaced the brass cylinder block with aluminium and puts bronze liners in the cylinders and brass liners in the valves. He shows the height of the block to be 49mm which is 1 15/16". Regards, Alan C.

    Marine Engine Plans

Hi, Has anyone had a crack at making the engine from the plans shown below? The link to it is: www.john-tom.com/MyPlans/Steam%20Engines/MarineEngine.pdf There appears to be some missing views. There is no side view of the cylinder block for example so it's height isn't specified. I can...

My new Diamond in the rough

Hi, There are heaps of videos about restoring and running south bend lathes on youtube. Tubal Cain is good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz9pZfGE-U0 and here is a link to a video showing how to get your purchase up and running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD7wDdVaMGQ Regards, Alan C.

    The new lathe

Hi John, I see you have an X2.7 mill. I have an SX2.7 and it has a peculiarity which I'm not sure is a fault or a misguided design feature. When I use the handwheel on the side to lower the quill (without it rotating) the handwheel rotates a few degrees after the quill hits the...

    The new lathe

Hi John, There is a carriage lock on the SC4. It's the 3rd capscrew from the right on the right hand side of the carriage in front of the v-way. It's awkard to get at and use and needs to be well tightened down to be effective. Alan C.

What to do with finished projects?

I inherited this corner china cabinet which is a good place to put finished projects without taking up a lot of room. These can sometimes be picked up quite cheaply second hand. Regards, Alan C.

    Help with a clock

Hi Don, Thanks for the offer. I've joined the Model-Engineer website which has a good clock section. One of their members has posted some pictures of his build which have helped me figure out what goes where. http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=123453#2113144...

    finish when turning

Hi Paul, If you want a really good finish on the lathe I would suggest you buy a diamond cutting tool from Eccentric Engineering. Sharpening the HSS tools is easy using the holder which comes with it. There is only one angle to worry about. Using square tool bits gives a good finish...

    Help with a clock

Hi, Has anyone here made the weight driven 8 day wall clock described in the John Wilding book? I started making one and came to an awkward bit and so I set it aside for a bit to think about it. That was 10 - 15years ago. I've spent the last week or so trying to remember what the problem...

    Schmidt Water Pressure Engine

Here is the link to Cedge's thread. I don't think there are any plans in it but lots of construction pictures. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/showthread.php?t=1469 The best way to search for stuff on this site is to use Google Advanced Search here...

    Drill Sharpener

Well I've had an interesting day. John Moran on his site: http://www.gadgetbuilder.com/DrillSharp.html says: " Drilling a hole to accurate size is best done by drilling one size under and then removing the small amount of material remaining with the final size drill. Using a drill with SPAs...

    Optimum TU2907 Lathe

Thanks Hopper. Just what I wanted to know. I've been looking for a quality 10" lathe and I'm getting nowhere. There doesn't seem to be any European or American suppliers (unless you spend Megabucks on a Hardinge toolroom lathe) and the smallest that the better Taiwanese suppliers make seems to...
