I found out 3 things about my setup with slitting saws

    1) That wasn't the slitting saw I wanted, it was a wood cutting saw that ended up in that cabinet drawer. Oops. I figure it burned the teeth off immediately, and then I pushed harder. 2) My cheap vise doesn't hold very well, the fixed jaw stretches the bolts and flexes away. 3) a 1/3 absent...

Idle RPM of single cylinder 4 cycle engine

I don't have much advice, just got a few data points. I can't get any of my commercial (OS .56 ci) 4 strokes that low. I'm happy if I can get it to 2000 rpm! The instruction manual for this one OS I have says 2000 rpm is about right but it maxes out at 9000 with the prop I'm using. My single...

First engine, an RC aircraft 4 stroke

Way back when I became interested in radio control models, I dreamed about designing, building, and flying my own engine. At that time I was pretty good with a hacksaw and a file, but that's all I had, so that dream sat and waited for 15 years. Now I'm equipped with a 10" lathe and an...

Reverse lead screw on a B2227L

Ok, here we go. It at least gives you the heights of the gear and such. Replace whatever threads with whatever you like. The boss location used to be about 0.300 to the right, but I found it wouldn't quite engage properly with any size idler gear. Moving it to the left solved that, and seems to...

Reverse lead screw on a B2227L

That's a perfect solution! There's enough space for that in the enclosure. It'd be a double V per step, but that's no problem. I was thinking about this last night, and thought belts were the way to go, because if you went gears, you'd need a third gear to reverse it back to normal rotation...

    silver solder?

Good info, thanks! Now I know how to go shopping! It sucks going into the welding shop and not knowing what words I should be talking about. That's an interesting idea I've had in the back of my mind since I saw one of those little solid state tig machines. I can actually get a setup cheaper...

    Gloves: blue nitrile, safe?

That is all the warning I need. Thanks for that. No gloves then.

    Gloves: blue nitrile, safe?

I know that using a leather or mechanic's glove is dangerous, but I think using the blue nitrile or vinyl gloves should be fairly safe. I've had tonnes of these gloves fall apart when I ask them to stand up to automotive mechanic's abuse, and the other day a long curl snagged and tore one glove...

    silver solder?

Interesting, that's what I was looking for! rust/limescale remover? That's pretty easy, don't have to go far to get it! Thanks! Who knew something like silver soldering could be controversial.

    silver solder?

Sorry, but your post also suffers from the lack of detail you speak of. What do you recommend to pickle the object with? Are there agents you buy, or do you make them? Many of us are here looking for details because we lack the experience. There are thousands of cleaning products and we need the...

Reverse lead screw on a B2227L

btw, that's the 55 tooth gear but almost any work except that larger idler gears restrict the size of the gear that can engage it. The littler gears work just fine too, they just tuck under the driving gear more than being on the side. I might remove the loctite from the post and make it...

Reverse lead screw on a B2227L

I was thinking the same thing. Big diameter cast iron stuff, it goes too fast! I might see if I can squeeze a larger top pulley in there, or maybe some kind of back gear gearbox off of that top shaft and drive it with a shorter belt, or something. Starting to cramp that shroud though, might have...

    silver solder?

How much dish detergent? From my experience doing dishes, a little goes a long way in making the bubbles go everywhere. I imagine putting some in boiling water will froth like crazy!

Reverse lead screw on a B2227L

I've got a Craftex (Busy Bee) B2227L that's got a nice geared head, but not a quick change threading gearbox or anything, just the usual changable gear train for threading. Soon I'm going to need to cut a left hand acme thread, so I decided it was time to get going on making this thing move the...

Using a fixed steady to support long work on a lathe

how would you deal with that? low rpm and a traveling steady as well?

Using a fixed steady to support long work on a lathe

wow, it's simpler than I'd expected. Happy for that! Thanks everyone! Sweeping the top and the side seems like it would account for any bed twist too, no?

    Tailstock ram doesn't extend enough

I feel a little foolish. I put my compound back on and set it up like my question (I had taken it off to do some milling). I didn't have the usual 1/4" brazed carbide bit mounted in the tool post, so I grabbed one of the 1/2" bits I had in a drawer, and one of the sizes that the manual says is...

    Tailstock ram doesn't extend enough

On every lathe I've used (granted, only 3 of them) all of different brands and sizes, the tailstock travel is never long enough so that if one end of my work is held in the chuck, and the other end in the tailstock live center, I can't cut the entire length from center to chuck in one pass. I...

Using a fixed steady to support long work on a lathe

I've got something to stick on my lathe that's longer than fits between centers. If I mount it with a steady at the tailstock end, how can I ensure I've got the work adjusted in the steady so that it's running on the centerline of the lathe and not flexed off center? Dial indicator doesn't work...

    silver solder?

another problem with burning off the oil is the heat. Heat without a barrier to oxygen like flux increases the rate of oxidization. If any color change took place from the heat, you've got a layer of oxidization. Solder of any kind won't stick to oxidization. I definitely think it's inaccurate...
