    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

Thank you for posting all those pics of how you made the valves and cages ! Pics can fool the eye, what size are the valve stems and heads? To me, it looks like the test setup does not test leakage between the valve stems and the cages, am I correct? Are stem seals of some sort planned...

Building a twin cylinder inline i.c. engine.

Harley motorcycles use dual output coils too. Onan twin engines and their generators also use dual output coils. Just a couple more sources. You don't still have the coil from the engine you built 10 years ago?

Seeking plans for twin cylinder inline i.c. engine

Strictly IC magazine had a huge selection of different engine build articles and plans over the many years it was published. I don't know if back issues are available anywhere or not. I have every issue ever printed, really lucked out and got them from a local fellow for $40 !!!

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

What kind of alcohol? There are 3 common ones, methyl, isopropanol and ethanol. Each has different burn characteristics. Considering you got yours from a drug store I assume its isopropanol (aka rubbing alcohol).

My Flat Head Hit Miss Engine

What method did you use for making the piston rings? Yours obviously work very well.

My Flat Head Hit Miss Engine

If you had a sawzall around one of the long blades would do the trick with a lot less wear and tear on the arm. Engine is looking great ! Very nice work.

Searching for a really good book on TIG welding

Keep watching, its warm inside ! Taking a few notes is a good idea too, just like in the old school days. Having those notes to refer to when you do go in the garage to practice will help progress.

Searching for a really good book on TIG welding

Even with being educated on all the proper techniques the need for lots of practice cannot be over emphasized. I had did a little TIG and that was many years before I bought my new rig a couple years ago. When I got it my first tries were just as ugly as what Brian is experiencing. I...

Searching for a really good book on TIG welding

Brain has been pretty quiet about the suggestions. I wonder if he found a book he likes or watched any of the recommended videos?

Searching for a really good book on TIG welding

I agree but he already has/bought the inverter TIG. He also needs AC as he does aluminum.

Searching for a really good book on TIG welding

Beware of older books on the subject. Inverter TIG welders are a fairly new breed (which Brian has), the older books were covering transformer based machines. There are quite a few differences, for example AC frequency, that was not adjustable on old transformer machines. Inverter vs...

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

How many RPM's is that in the latest video?

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Here is a hinge knuckle I made for my skid steer. Its 5 pieces total. The largest section is 1-1/2 inches thick. With preheat I did it at about 150amps. Without preheat not a prayer.

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Deep V grooves with a gap are standard practice TIG welding pipe. Even the best pro tig welder couldn't have done that piece without preheating using a welder limited to 200 amps max.

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Rough rule of thumb is 1 amp for each thousandth of material thickness without preheating. With a TIG like you have preheating a piece like that is mandatory. If you don't preheat the aluminum will just absorb the heat applied and not puddle until the entire piece is near melting point...

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

The excellent suggestions given suggest removing material inboard of the pivot pin, not necessarily adding, making taller etc. It could be a simple fix that would only take a few minutes to machine away some material and try.

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

a quick search found this recipe on a steel manufacturers site for annealing O1 steel. Sounds like the proposed torch method may still leave it quite hard. Annealing Annealing must be performed after hot working and before re-hardening. Heat at a rate not exceeding 400°F per hour...

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Still going to try and get it running slower like the typical hit/miss engines ?

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

In the video it appears you are now using the commercial carb and have a throttle lever. Will the engine slow down at all? Its running well but awful fast for a hit miss engine.

Time for a new Horizontal Hit and Miss engine

Considering the carb has no throttle plate to adjust rpm's it sounds like you need to make a reducer bushing for it to accomplish the same function. Pretty easy to try.
