    CAD, CADCAM on Linux

FreeCAD work fine on Linux and has some impressive functionality. Learning curve is nearly straight up on it too but there are some really good tutorials on it too, some of them as Youtube videos and some of them are by developers. Once I get a design, then I can again use the CAM function in...

Looking for a good way to learn solidworks

I've been learning and using FreeCAD. There are a lot of instructional videos online, some done by the developers themselves, plus lots of information in written form. Unless you need all the functions of Solidworks and are willing to pay the price, look at FreeCAD. All it will cost you is...

    Boxford / South Bend / 9" lathe : metric screw cutting on 8tpi leadscrew : 80/63 approximation

A 63 tooth gear is easy to design in a CAD package and a 3D printer doesn't care how many teeth the gear has. As long as you are not trying to transmit too much torque a 3D printed gear works fine.

    Adhesives for Round Rubber Belting

I happened on an adhesive called E6000 that seems to be quite good for adhesion and stays flexible too. It may not hold your shoe soles but it does hold them onto my boots and I find many other uses for it too. I'm still using on my 1 oz container but found a 3.7 oz tube for when it runs out...

    hauling a small mill

if you haul it in the back of the pickup, unless you have it tethered well, make sure it is as far forward as it can go because if you don't, it will be at the first quick stop.

    hauling a small mill

Thoughts on replacing the motor: If the motor is functional why not buy a VFD to power it and retain the functionality plus the advantages of the VFD. It would be hooked to the 220V supply but add speed control (if I am not mistaken). For some processes the ability to reduce the speed may be...

    ANVILS

Ah-ah-ah..... definitely you and me have the some hobbies . Look what i found in the dump years ago .... You have a higher quality dump than I. All I find is rusty cans.

Putting some grip (stippling) on an aluminium drive pulley.

Contrary to what one would expect, a little oil on a v-belt that was beginning to slip due to age and wear would cause it to grip better. It would get the farmer by during the last of the harvest when time was critical but that belt better be replaced before the next harvest.

    Parting tool chatter

Inserted carbides are not superior to a properly sharpened HSS tool but they come from the supplier sharp and of the correct shape. They often have chip breakers built in that are difficult to match with grinding HSS tools. When damaged it only takes a minute to turn the insert to a new face...

    Parting tool chatter

Yesterday I tried to modify a single point threading tool to bring the point nearer the edge to facilitate threading up to a shoulder. My eyesight isn't as good as it was 40 years ago and I speny half an hour with my under powered grinder trying to grind away the unwanted metal only to end up...

    ANVILS

For light duty your anvil will be OK but for heavier work the anvil depends on its mass to absorb the shock of the hammering which is why some of the old anvils are so expensive and heavy. Now that you have made that one, set it on a wooden platform instead of on concrete as the shock of...

Putting some grip (stippling) on an aluminium drive pulley.

I think you will find that along with the extra grip you get from that you will also find excessive belt wear. The more common way to transmit more power is to use a wider belt and pulleys.

    3D printed bevel gear

I don't have much CAD experience but I do a little mucking about with FreeCAD. There is an addon that generates gears, also free. There is a section just for bevel gears so if you want to download FreeCAD, there is an add on manager in the tools tab that lets you add the gear generator. What...

3020 China mill ?s and issues.

According to the documentation there should be a settings tab at the top of the screen that lets you change the values. Have you read through the GRBLPanel wiki? https://github.com/gerritv/Grbl-Panel/wiki GRBL-Panel settings tab wiki. https://github.com/gerritv/Grbl-Panel/wiki/Settings

Autodesk Fusion 360 or other free software?

I found Fusion 360 to be pretty complete but I didn't want to be harnessed to Autodesk and their changing policy regarding how the account can be used, expecting them to let me get "hooked" on their free version, then begin charging for its use. Therefor, I switched to FreeCAD. It wasn't a bad...

3020 China mill ?s and issues.

Electrical engineers consider EMI interference as noise. You won't hear it but you can see and measure it with an oscilloscope The Z axis starting location is set in your G-code. You'll have to look for it.

There are limitations in gcode senders. Try the same file in bCNC and see if that makes a difference.

    Parting tool chatter

I have a mini-lathe with (as explained by someone else) the rigidity of a wet noodle but I can part off quite well with the sharp blade but I use a diamond honing stick as it needs to be sharper than what my grinder can do. Honing all my cutters is essential with this lathe.

    BAZMAK-Diary of a Myford ML7 lathe restoration

If you use a VFD you won't want the motor to be single phase. The 3 phase motor with output from the VFD will give you some speed control and will be driven from a single phase input. The only way you would want a single phase motor is if it was DC (oxymoron, single phase DC) with a variable...

3020 China mill ?s and issues.

Fusion 360 is a CAD/CAM package and can let you design a project, then export that project as a set of gcode instructions. Take that set of instructions and use something like Universal Gcode Sender or bCNC to send the instructions to the controller on the mini-mill which interprets the...
