    Help please.

Have you been applying contact grease to the contacts on the drum switch? That grease will probably double the lifespan of the contacts.

Cable detached from controller to step motor

Unless you have shielded cable bonded to the Amphenol connector any type connector will suffice. On the flip side of this, if you have problems with the CNC or DRO especially, shielded cables are a big help.

    Kx1 stepper motor.

It depends what the real source of the problem is. Stepper motors come in various frame sizes and lengths with longer ones taking more amperage and developing more torque. Then it depends on how the stepper is connected to the ballscrew. If it is a simple coupling, then releasing that from...

    Linux "Q4OS"

I would define a "program" as a series of instructions that the operating system can run to make it do something. An "image" cannot be run in its original condition as it is just a bit for bit copy of the operating system and needs to be "installed" on the hard drive so the computer can boot...

Have you read similar instructions for Windows? Be prepared for a brain freeze there too. None of us was born with understanding of computer systems, you have learned Windows over years of use.

    3D Printer problems - Monoprice/Wanhao D6

Not all filament, even though the same material, is the same. I've had to adjust the nozzle and bed temp with a change of PLA filament.

New 3D Printer. . . Have no clue what to do.

Look at the gcode the slicer produces. The first few lines define what the temperature should be for the bed and the nozzle. I use Cura as the slicer but then have Octoprint running the gcode. It allows me to specify a temperature offset if I don't like what Cura puts out or if I want it to...

    3D Printer problems - Monoprice/Wanhao D6

Some times the wall thickness on a 3D printed part is too thin to be able to machine it to size without exposing the honeycomb interior. Along with that is the problem of clamping them tight enough to keep them from moving without cracking them.

    3D Printer problems - Monoprice/Wanhao D6

You left out my category, those who are doing only 1-offs but have poor fine motor skills so that making parts that fit together manually doesn't really work well and the ones who do additive machining (3D printing) as well as subtractive machining (mill and lathe). Learning some CAD drawing...

    3D Printer problems - Monoprice/Wanhao D6

I doubt that CAD will ever be easy to learn but it has so many advantages over pencil drawing for larger projects that people will work to learn it. Along with that comes CAM for the CNC machines. I found CAM to be just as frustrating as CAD but since it can be done once for a part or assembly...

I think the Pirate Ship arriving at my place might convert some of my neighbors being as I live nearly as far from an ocean as possible in the United States and 150 miles from the nearest seaport.

Moral- On my shop wall for years

I believe this quote by Terry Pratchett is appropriate in this situation. " The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots...

Moral- On my shop wall for years

This saying used to be mostly true but bean counters have managed to take the good companies who made outstanding tools for a reasonable price and turn them into expensive tools that have no more quality than the cheaper alternatives.

    Tooling suggestions sought

I live 20 miles from the nearest store that would carry individual drill bits. I also farm and at times the amount of time it would take to go buy a single drill bit is worth way more than the cost of the set of drill bits, plus the direct dollar cost of the round trip is near the cost of a...

Ban on small engines in California

I agree that new vehicle have unneeded complexities and I don't need a cell phone connected to the car but along with that complexity come things like anti-knock sensors to increase the engine efficiency, fuel injection that give the precise amount of fuel for combustion, and minor things like...

Ban on small engines in California

Using fuel in a car has varying efficiencies. Best efficiency come from a wide open throttle but most cars have so much excess horsepower that that condition rarely applies. On the other hand, a power station is run to be the most efficient it can as that maximizes the profit. A car going...

    Wise choice or not?

I believe that Alibre will give you a nice 3-D picture of what you want to print. The slicer takes that 3-D picture and slices it into layers since that is what a 3-D printer prints. It also sets the temperature of the bed (if you have a heated bed) and the temperature of the extruder (so it...
