Re: crooked core in cyl casting

Ok, but explain to me why that bugs you. The reason I do it, is so I can see it. Grasshopper

Re: crooked core in cyl casting

Thanks to everyone who commented on my "young generation" drivel. Sometimes I go off on a tangent without thinking. You have brought me back down to earth when I tend to get on my soapbox. We do have a tendency to focus on the negative. Yes, there are many talented and smart "young" people out...

Re: crooked core in cyl casting

Terry, I've always been amazed these days at what people are accepting as acceptable work! I feel that the younger the person, the more they complain. Is it possible, at least here in the States, that the "participation trophy" and "me" crowd weren't taught how to work for what they get? A...

Re: crooked core in cyl casting

I just went to the PM Research site and looked at the #1 engine. They show a picture of the cylinder casting with a rather good looking bore. Wonder how you got that mismatched one? One solution I thought of was to mic the outside of cylinder, subtract 1.000 inch (bore) and divide by 2. Then you...

    Advice on a boiler burner

When I tried to build a Rider Ericcson hot air engine (and failed), I used this plan to make 2 sizes of a Sandy C Burner. Grasshopper

What to charge to thread a rod

Thank you for your answers. If I'm lucky, it will be malleable steel. They are providing the rods. I'm just trying to figure out, will I use my 3/8-16 die or have to cut them on the lathe. I have done both. But at least you are giving me a starting point. I'm retired and this is a way to get...

What to charge to thread a rod

I guess I should be more specific. 3/8-16 on both ends of 24 rods. 48 threadings. What would someone charge. Grasshopper

What to charge to thread a rod

I normally don't charge friends or family to do something for them. However, a neighbor asked what I would charge their school to thread 24 rods with 3/8 - 24 threads at each end. And she will not let me do it for free. Any idea what I should charge? Grasshopper

Free plans for a larger, simpler, beam engine

I can see a light at the end of the tunnel for this project. Some parts do have a little binding and I'd rather have that than sloppy loose. Binding can be lapped away. I'm getting ready to finish the air valve and my brain just can't get around something. Where are the exhaust ports supposed to...

Free plans for a larger, simpler, beam engine

Brian, I could use your help on the Lower Valve Lever-2 of the Larger Simple Beam Engine. I've included a BAD rendering of the lever but I'm sure you'll get the idea. I have no knowledge of CAD and do not have CNC on my machines. Everything is manual. Is it possible, after you see the...

    Chrysler Hemi 1/4 scale

I've never heard of "swept volume". What is it? Grasshopper

    Chrysler Hemi 1/4 scale

The bore and stroke dimensions do come out to 425.58 CI. But wouldn't the volume of the cylinder heads add to the 425.58 volume making it a bigger engine? I thought that's why NASCAR engine builders have to CC the heads with a liquid to make sure the total volume doesn't go over specs. Or are...

    Ouch!

You want OUCH! Imagine you're working on your mill. There is a small 3 - 4 pound machinists' vice on the table. You turn and your arm knocks it off the table. One of the corners lands DIRECTLY on your big toe (and you're wearing tennis shoes). I immediately sat down on the ground as I thought I...
