    Casting brass.

My Dad was a welder in the 1950's. He repaired this machinist's vice with brazing. 70 years later, it still works fine and smoothly:

    Help with Easel program

I was given a Fireball V90 CNC router setup. The young man allows me to use his online Easel drawing program. I'm learning as I've never used CNC before. But I'm getting there. I've drawn something in Easel and twice the fellow showed me how to put M2 at the end of the G code and I've lost how...

What have you been doing today?

Last week I inherited a 10 year old Fireball V90 CNC router and computer for the shop. I made a workstation for it over last weekend. Have never worked with CNC, so it's time for this old dog to learn new tricks!!! The fellow said although it's made for wood, if your not too aggressive, you can...

    Press Fits

I built a crankshaft from machined parts with Loctite 680. Two of the 8 joints have loosened up. I had the holes bored with a 0.376 reamer and the shafts are 0.375. Six of the joints seem solid and two loose. Should there have been more room in the fit larger than 0.001 for the Loctite to work...

    Set Screw Advice

I want to thank everyone for their advice. This engine will not power anything. I just like to build them, take a video of it running and move on to my next project. Sometimes I forget something, "When all else fails, read the instructions". I've been engrossed in making parts. So, I looked at...

    Cabin Fever 2023

A question for the future. When I make my steam engines, I make them to run on compressed air. To power them, I fit them with male compressed air fittings. Easy to hook up my female fitting along with an on/off valve. What kind of fittings do you use at a show to show how your engines run? What...

    Information about NAMES 2023

People are thinking NAMES is toast. I just looked at their website and it says there are plans to hopefully hold it in 2024: https://www.namesexposition.com/

    Set Screw Advice

I could use some advice on a set screw problem. I'm building a marine steam engine. When I put the eccentric valve assembly and tightening the set screw on the crankshaft (many times during the build to see movement) sometimes something binds a bit and the eccentric moves on the crank. This will...

HELP, my shop is a MESS

When I can't find a particular tool, I look around at a horrendous mess I've made over a few weeks. Then I spend a few hours putting everything back where it's supposed to be. Next, I spend another few weeks messing it up again. You know, "Wash, Rinse, Repeat"!!!

Said I would never do it.

Steve, we are dinosaurs. We grew up with common sense, the ability to think and to communicate face to face with people. The young come out of the womb with a smart phone in their hands. This is their world. They don't learn how to think or learn common sense. Everything they learn comes off the...

    Over packaging

I love when I get a package with so much clear packing tape around it, I need a jack hammer to get it open. Then there is so much stretch plastic wrap around the object, you have to be careful with the razor knife to get it off. Grasshopper
