The Moriya Story -- short form !

Hello Wolf... Looks like you've made a fine running Moriya Major for yourself ! I usually run mine also around 350 rpm at which speed it gives quite a good wide airstream. Occasionally, iI I'm working a ways off, I'll pull up the wick and let her work at 500 rpm. Indeed, Aluminum works...

    The Moriya Story--in the beginning

The earlier offering of the "The Moriya Story--short form" in this Forum outlined the succession of Moriya II from Moriya Major and that from the original 10" Moriya fan. l. ]...

    A question about flash boilers....ish

I seem to remember reading about something along these lines in an article in Model Engineer long ago. I checked the scribbled index cards I still had and found this: “Boilerless Steam Engine” by Hall in Vol. 132 (1966) on pages 762-4. I no longer have this issue but maybe someone can find...

That's the tube ! Send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll get the cup seal on its way to you.

The Moriya Story -- short form !

The leather cup seal is not a stock item. It was homemade using thin very flexible leather stock and formed as leather is commonly wet shaped. In this case a leather disc was soaked, pressed into a die, left to dry and then trimmed. The seal is then thoroughly oil soaked. The goal is to...

The Moriya Story -- short form !

Inch bearings are hard to find these days. BearingsDirect.com and SDP-SI.com both have 5/16" ID bearings (in assorted ODs) that can be used. ABEC 3 grade bearings are plenty good for the Major. Or you could also go metric with 8mm. The .332 dia hole goes through to the central hole as the...

They look great, Bob. Very fine authentic job. The shield between the front legs is a good addition.

Would be glad to help out with whatever I have leftover Jerry. After you get the book and look it over, let me know. Jim.

The Moriya Story -- short form !

Mike, if and when you get to Moriya Major in your project bucket, I still have some leftover tube for the displacer shell, hot end, and power cylinder... would be happy to donate it toward another Moriya Major. Jim

The Moriya Story -- short form !

Moving shop to a new place is difficult , but it offers the opportunity to end up with something better. Best wishes. Meantime, you may wish to check out the video by one Bob Cannon who made a very fine example of Moriya Major: Jim

The Moriya Story -- short form !

Mike... In round numbers, the displacer to piston swept volume ratio of Moriya Major is 1.6, that of the original Moriya is 1.8, and Moriya II has a SVR of 1.7. Anywhere in this range makes for a good fan engine. Since Moriya was the first Stirling you built and it ran on your...

The Moriya Story -- short form !

You're welcome ! I've seen many builders' variations on the stand, blades, and guard over the years, but this is the first I've heard of a Flash Gordon theme ! Wow !

The Moriya Story -- short form !

Another fan ! Glad to hear that you made a great runner ! The easiest way to find the books is to enter 'Moriya Major' in the Amazon search window and it will get you right to it. And down the page a bit you will also see the book on 'Moriya II', the updated version of the original Moriya.

    Automatic Finger

The automatic finger shown in the video is the result of a self-imposed challenge to make a device to drive my Wooden Finger Engine with no modifications to the original Finger Engine itself. The idea was to make a powered finger that would drive the Finger Engine just as a living finger does...

The Moriya Story -- short form !

I saw mention of the name "Moriya" on the forum, so I thought it might be a good time to bring her story up to date. The 10" fan we named Moriya, originated in my workshop in the early 1970's - yes, some 50 years ago. Plans were subsequently published in Live Steam Magazine (Dec 1974-Feb 1975)...
