    Demoiselle boxer twin

Hi Andy, The parts were made from solid, milled, drilled, turned, filed, sanded, polished.... with the occasional amount of elbow steam. The milling operation is shown above. You cannot solder aluminium with silver, there are methods of soldering aluminium but the melting point of some of...

    Another Edwards 5 Radial

Hi Ray, Maybe it is an idea to make oval cam followers. Slots can easily be made with end mills ,see A. Finding rollers that small will be a challenge I think. Maybe you should consider using separate liners for the cam lifters bolted on to the cam housing, see B. This gives you more...

    Another Edwards 5 Radial

Ray, are you planning a surface coating such as hard anodizing for the cam lobes ? This part is subject to severe friction and you don't want wear particles circulating through your engine... Jos

    Another Edwards 5 Radial

I think the slot for the key is too close to the crankweb. Closest to the crankweb is the main bearing, then a spacer, and then the cam gear. See the sketch. I think you can still use the crank, just extend the slot as far as needed. Jos.

    Another Edwards 5 Radial

When I was in the army, back in the seventies, I was a truck driver and these trucks had petrol engines with a watertight ignition system. The HT cables looked very much like the ones on the Edwards. Bu the following will clear things up: Jos.

    Another Edwards 5 Radial

A remark on spark ignition on this engine. It seems that the original engine made by Forest Edwards himself ran on petrol ( or gasoline in the U.S way of speaking). See the picture below .There is a tubular extension on the rear that seems to be the distributor. The drawings of the engine have...

    Demoiselle boxer twin

Hello Edi, As far as I know Alberto Santos Dumont is still considered an all-time hero in Brazil like , for instance, Ayrton Senna. He was also a pioneer balloonist with gas balloons. My engine will not look like any of the original engines such as the Dutheil-Chalmers. This also applies to...

    Demoiselle boxer twin

After a break due to some other projects I went on with the cyinder heads. I milled the slot for the rocker arm support. After that , drilling of pilot holes for the intake and exhaust ports. And planing mounting surfaces for in- and exhaust pipe flanges. Having completed this, I went on...

    V6 90cc

Maybe you should take a look at the site of Rainbowtronic in Germany Start . As far as I know they have glow drivers for 5 and 7 cylinder engines but maybe they can provide you with a 6-cylinder version. Jos

Hallo Xander, If you operate the engine as an petrol engine you will have to lower the compression( which means enlarging the combustion chamber) Do you achieve this by shortening the piston or the conrod? Groeten uit Rotterdam, Jos

Forrest Edwards 5 cylinder compression ratio?

Hello Major, You might consider purchasing a Glow-Control system from the German company Rainbow-tronic www.rainbow-tronic.de . I am thinking about it , for my Edwards. They also provide glow plug connectors and cables .Shipping costs are 28 € for countries in Europe but outside the EU. The...

Starter for radial engine (Edwards 5)

Hi Diego, How about this: Just a piece of wood with a piece of bicycle tube wrapped around it. I remember seeing R/C flyers starting their 10cc's with something like this, back in the sixties. With a 5 cylinder engine, you have only one cylinder on compression at the time, which means 12...

I think is is always handy to make a translucent model of a cylinder head to see where all the holes are going, ant to avoid unwanted interference these holes. Rocker arm support is also fitted.

Starter for radial engine (Edwards 5)

Hi Diego, Please note that radial engines can have a hydraulic lock when there is too much fuel and/or oil in the lower cylinders. So, if you experience a very "high compression" feeling it may help to turn the prop backwards a few times or remove the glowplugs to get rid of the excess fluid...
