    Jim builds his second v-8

Next step was to make the housing. I milled most of it. Here's a picture of the base being milled to shape from the bottom. Its got ears for bolting down the cap so I had to mill it in two stages. I used a 1/4 dia, 4 flute cutter. Here's another picture of the milling out of the top side. It's...

Got started again. Had a google redirect virus on my laptop. Really hosed it up. It got me sidetracked for a while. Last couple of days I made some parts for the distributor. Here's a picture of the stem.

If you're asking about the gear cut from 1/16 plate I rough cut first with a 1/8 end mill then followed up with a 1/16 end mill. I don't recall what I used on the spokes. The same sequence was used on the pinion. For a long time was thinking of pocketing in from the side for the waterjacket...

    Jim builds his second v-8

I'm finally getting back to the project. Gonna start off with a question: How much space do I need between the cylinder and block wall for a water jacket? I have only 0.032 space between the cylinder wall and the block. Is this enough or do I need to find more? I know water can flow through that...

    Lil Brother/Meissner Spark intensifier

Regarding wire, I've had pretty good luck using silicone covered wire. Silicone wire seems to have the right amount of flex and the covering seems to provide the right amount of insulation. I especially like test lead wire. I get mine from Radio Shack. I'm sure though there's lots of different...

    Tiny Inline 4 Cylinder IC

Can't be beat. Now you'll have to start it after work every night for the next year just to hear it run. It'll become an obssion if it already hasn't.

    Hall Effect Sensor

Add zener diodes where ever possible for spike suppression Make sure your choice of hall sensor can take the heat.

Does the fit have to be pretty good?

Sure looks good. That'd be a good way for making an oil pump for putting in the crankcase. I thought though water pumps were impeller types for the volume?

I'm traveling, otherwise I'd be in the shop. Sometimes things just don't fall into place. Monday I started a distributor base. Had it looking good then drilled it 4-40. Damn. Should have been for 2-56. So start again. Screwed up the second one too. Quit for the day.

Sounds like its coming along. Its nice to have the crank done.

I don't own a rotary table but I do have a spare gear drive servo motor. I machined a coupler to attach the 3/8 stock to the end of this motor. The coupler is seen in the movie. I made a support to hold the stock near the end being machined, also obvious in the movie. I programmed the a axis...

Although the helical distributor drive gears worked ok I wasn't pleased with the looks. Today I made a new pair. One is the real deal. The second is only for a test pinion. The real one will have to be cut in the camshaft. I haven't yet cut the cam to length so I'll have to wait to cut that...

Next project, make some timing gears. Here I'm cutting spokes in 1/16 brass sheet. Look closely you'll see teeth cut on the right side near the clamp. I cut one side, then reclamp and cut the other. I bore the center hole in the same setup so I don't loose my center. Having the center in the...

So I drilled the block for the distributor. It's 15 degrees off of vertical. I made a distributor shaft and stuck it in the hole.

You know, they run well but don't look all that good. I know a guy who has a gear reduced servo motor laying around so today I ask him if I could use it. He gave it to me. I'm gonna set it up on a fourth axis with it. I only have three outputs but I think I can use y output for driving A. I...

Before I could drill the block for the distributor I had to lay out its position in the cad program. I could now do that because I now know the spacing required for the gears. Here's a picture of the layout.

I've been busy but not in the shop. I finally got back to it. I made a couple of helical spiral gears to drive the distributor and decided I needed to test them out. I made a setup to run them for a while. I ran them for an hour without any noticeable wear. This setup also gave me an opportunity...
