Shop built sparkplugs for model engines

Hi, I made the spark plug for my Rumely tractor, I used Corian for the insulator and I used nickel silver 1/16 rod for the electrode and there is no sign of any erosion so far. I seem to remember from way back that conducting the heat away from the central electrode is more important than the...

    Tap sizes

Beware, taps aren't always the right size. I have a 3/8 x 40 plug tap [UK made] that is definitely undersize. I recently bought another set of 3 taps of this size and they are all slightly different overall diameter. To get a thread near enough the correct size I had to grind down the second...

Fix for porosity in brass ?

Hi, I've made some castings in brass and they had porosity problems, I've learned since that the solution is to add some phosphorus in the form of a stick of copper/phosphorous brazing rod which is commonly used in brazing joints in refrigeration applications. This stuff is cheap and I've got...

    valve lapping

I found that I couldn't get good compression on my Rumely until I re-machined the seats to a very narrow edge, no more than a few thou. I lightly lapped them in with metal polish. The compression has improved a lot since I've done more running. Oh, and I chucked the valves in the 4 jaw...

A Really, Really Good Book on Engine Building

I built a great rotary table using the rotating base from my machine vice which i never use. I made a worm gear 5 inches diameter with about 200 teeth which I free hobbed using a tap. The table I made from a 7 inch diameter slice of freecutting steel. The whole thing is only 2 inches high and...

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Thanks guys, I'm very new to trying to make videos. I couldn't get over how long they take to upload to Youtube, that one took 6 hours!

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Some explanation;- The upper of the two shafts you can see has two pinions on it both of which can slide. In the position shown the engine is in neutral. The two brass pieces are the selector forks and are moved by the two gear levers. If the right hand gear is slid to the left it engages...

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Thanks Shopshoe. I rather like it unpainted as well. The problem with painting it would be it's too shiny and un-tractor like, also I can't get the Rumely decals from anywhere.

IC Hit & Miss engine coolant.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well, I notice my Rumely tractor cylinder barrel is going rusty despite putting Central heating rust inhibitor in the water. Would it be an idea to use some sort of oil as a coolant?

    Miniture spark plugs

I made the body on my spark plug from Corian [worktop stuff]. You can stick it with superglue and seems to hold fine.

    Hit or miss engine igniter

Hi, I would like to know more about this. How does an ignitor work?

    Small casting (alluminium) aty home.

Yes it is, they are Salamander crucibles I used. They were great to deal with. They actually sent me the wrong size ones the first time I ordered, they just told me to keep them and they sent the right ones! I was very happy to do that.

    Small casting (alluminium) aty home.

I'll let you into a secret. Crucibles are much cheaper if you buy them directly from Morganite and buy say 3 at a time.

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Hi Willy, thanks for the reply, The round part with the lever is a slide which covers the air inlet holes to provide a choke for starting. Westbury says most people make the inlet too large. The inlet passages into the cylinder are only 8mm . I've now made another throttle slide with holes...

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Hi Folks, here's a video I made showing the details of my tractor engine. It's better quality than the last one because I got myself an action camera. The editing is more difficult than I thought though.

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Thanks guys, I think it's burning oil from the crankcase. I used an O ring seal on the piston but I suppose the first one could have become worn by the bore not being polished enough. It seemed to give a perfect vacuum seal when I tried it. I can easily enrich the fuel, I'll try that.

Engine for Rumely model F oil pull tractor

Thanks everybody. The running isn't right yet, it dies if I open the throttle. Any ideas as to why that could be please?
