Mery Explosive Vapor Engine: Getting 'Er Running

Carl, you won't have a problem running the engine with my Buzz Coil CDI. Spark always looks minimal on very small plug gaps. I do know some guys make the Rimfire plugs into side fire for propane. Just make sure to keep the buzz module as far away from the spark plug wires as possible. If you do...

    Arduino Rotary Table for Dummies

Thanks for making your sketch available to everyone Bruce. I'm anxious to now to get going. I need to get back up to speed with the Arduino. Your sketch will definitely make things go much faster.

    Cabin Fever Expo 2022 - 25th

I am still building 3 of my CDI units as time permits. I have an issue with my left eye and a follow up appointment this Friday and could not chance getting sick and missing my follow up appointment. The eye does seem to be getting very slowly better. I will leave the main page of my original...

    Roy SHOLL CDI

Thanks to everyone for your support and very fine comments. I am working on a transition for the CDI's but that won't happen until all the paper work is done to close down the S/S Machine & Engineering LLC. In the mean time, I will continue building my CDI systems. I just finished running Satra...

    Ignition question

Gordon, email me at rsholl@cncengines, I am still building CDI units and do a twin/waste fire CDI. Efficient and runs on 4.5-5 volts.

    Hall sensor mount

Gordon, it is best to use the plastic holder to insulate the hall from the engine. If your ground to the engine gets corrupted for any reason, the high voltage will try going through the ground wire in the hall sensor. Max voltage on a hall is less than 30 volts. The hall sensor with Futaba...

    Werowance attempts Upshur Vertical Single

What coil are you going to use? I use a .1uf 400 volt poly cap for my 6 volt model coil. I also have .22 in 630 volts but they are slightly larger. Panasonic ECW-FA2J224J .22 @ 630 volts. The .1 is the smallest at 400 volts but I don't have a part no. handy. Let me know by email and I will send...

    Hodgson Radial - won't run

Hi Jon, Steve is correct on the .040" gap. Now that we ship the hall sensor in the plastic D-tube, the air gap is pretty much the thickness of the tube so the magnet would need to be very close. BTW, the hall sensor can be removed from the D-tube and oriented 180 degrees from the way my wife...

    Hodgson Radial - won't run

Jon, what fuel are you using? Lee's engine will run with the Perry 4600 carb. I'm not a big fan of Coleman fuel and last check on price looks like it is getting too expensive. My first go to fuel is 100LL av-gas if it is available in your area. I'm lazy and run my RC aircraft fuel which is E-85...

    Hodgson Radial - won't run

Jon, the easiest way to jumper a cell is to cut a piece of AL or brass the length of a cell and put it in place of the removed battery. 1/2" stock works good for the dummy cell. You may need to bevel one end, just make sure it is making contact with box connectors. Quick check with a volt meter...

    Hodgson Radial - won't run

Steve is correct on the plug gap of .015" and yes my CDI functions different than the old Kettering system. I have talked with Lee about some of the issues encountered with the distributor set up. First, we do not need the brass tower contacts protruding down the inside of the cap. This leads to...

Atkinson Differential Engine - Making it work?

Hi Dave Sage, I've been trying to follow your build, definitely very interesting stuff but I'd expect no less from you. As for the reed valves, my first thought was to the small reed valve used in the Cox model airplane engine. I see they have change some but about mid way down on the link is...

    S / S CDI ignition system

Yes, I think we got off subject a bit. Lets get back to a bare set of points and forget about trying to add additional circuitry to them to de-bounce them. The best thing to do when using automotive type points is to set the gap as minimal as possible (less than .005"). The second option is to...

    S / S CDI ignition system

bluejets, I agree on using the open collector and that is what our hall sensor is, plus it plugs straight into the cdi with no extra circuitry.

    S / S CDI ignition system

bluejets, That does not work on our CDI. The WHITE wire is already logic high and feeding any voltage into it is a NO, NO. Most standard automotive points work well if the gap is kept small, in the range of 3 to 5 thousands of an inch. For reed or micro switches you would have much better luck...
