    Real 1144 "Stressproof"

I too have had good luck in the past with Stressproof 1144. That's why I'm using that instead of CRS with torch stress relief as recommended by Mr. Reichart's plans. I will see what happens after I try my hand with the real 1144 StressProof from LaSalle. If it still warps, it's my fault...

    Real 1144 "Stressproof"

Thanks! What I did is very similar. The main difference between what you and I did is that you made those block to offset the crank vs. me using three center drilled holes. I like your method because the block helps rigidity! It's not clear to me what holds the crankshaft in the blocks...

    Real 1144 "Stressproof"

Thanks for the info. My jacks have a cross hold drilled through their base. I sandwich them between plates that are clamped onto the crankshaft to hold the jack in place. That way I don't need to tighten them so that they deform the crankshaft. They're basically installed so that the jack...

    Real 1144 "Stressproof"

Thanks for mentioning Alro. I emailed Niagara-LaSalle and they told me Alro is an authorized dealer for their product. I ordered a new piece from Alro and hopefully it'll all work out. I've been making crankshafts for over a month! It's getting old... Here's what I've been doing. Maybe...

    Real 1144 "Stressproof"

I bought 3' of 1144 from a big name industrial supplier to make a crankshaft for my Panther Pup engine. Despite making fixtures to keep the crankshaft from flexing and collapsing, and trying three different methods of machining the throws (including using the toolpost grinder) I now have three...

    Sleeve Valve IC engines?

Has anybody made a running model of a sleeve valve IC engine? I'd love to see a video or pics. I think that, despite itsdisadvantages, a sleeve valve engine is just plain clever! I'd love to build one. John

    A new ignition circuit

The trick is the magnet has to be wide enough to give the desired dwell time... On model engines, this isn't much of an issue since the size ratio between the magnet and whatever is driving it is likely to be large. On a full size engine, you need a scaled up magnet or just use the existing...

OK fellas, I finally got back to the build last night. I started making the connecting rods. I'll let the photos below speak for how I approached it. I've got the rotary table set up to do the rest of the machining... Maybe this evening... John

Anyone know anything about this grease?

I have this can of grease. It is obviously very old. It's labeled Bat's Grease by the Battenfeld Grease company of Tonawanda NY. Whatver magic stuff is in the can hasn't degraded or separated in all these years. It is also the best stuff I have ever used. It is unbelievably slippery stuff...

    Panther Pup Build Started

Well fellas, it's been an adventuresome four days getting the mill down into my shop... Right now I have a sore back and a sense of accomplishment. I had the mill delivered to my job since we have a forklift and a loading dock. It arrived Thursday. We forklifted it onto my trailer and I...

    Panther Pup Build Started

My new is arriving tomorrow. I'm having it delivered at work since we have a loading dock and a forklift. Plus, I live at the end of a one lane dead end. A tractor trailer driver would NOT appreciate having to deliver to my home and have to back up the entire length of the road. In any...

    Panther Pup Build Started

I have taken a brief hiatus from making any more parts for the past few days... The parts I want to make next require milling. My other half has been listening to me curse my import mill/drill for some time. While it does the job, I'm always dissapointed at not being able to hit the...

    Farm Boy 475

As the builder of Farm Boy 408, I can appreciate what you did building it. Great Job! Yours is indeed very sedate - except when it fires: true violence there! I'd make sure the ignition timing is right. Mine doesn't kick anywhere near as bad. I wonder if you're firing too far before top dead...

    Wankel engine models?

I was just watching a video on the death of the Wankel or Rotary engine as Mazda calls them. This got me thinking... Has anyone ever made a model wankel engine? I've never seen one. John
