    Alba 1A Restoration

That's pretty damn good! For a lot of the stuff I do I'm usually just happy if it doesn't turn out an obvious parallelogram! ;-)

How can I find a good home for my father's steam engine

I know it's probably cumbersome to keep and maybe the sale would be extremely useful for much needed funds, but I'm going to go against the flow here and say that I think that is exactly the sort of thing that should be cherished and on show in a nice display case, and passed onto the...

Sensational work James! And as an added bonus, I think I've nutted out a few details on my new shaper's mechanical config from looking at your pics! cheers, Ian

    junk cast iron

+1 for the workbench or welding table! It's worth buying for that purpose alone! Or rip the table and top head section off, add a timber slab to the knee, and turn it into a really cool adjustable outdoor bar/benchtable! So many uses!

Very nice! Looking forward to see how you go! I've got a shaper coming my way (finally!) very soon so I well understand the excitement! I just love watching these working away! I was thinking when I do mine using one of the hammered metal machine spray paints, they look pretty awesome and...

    Search for a Laptop

Funnily enough, I hear that Windows 8 is the bestest, fastest, and most powerfulest version yet! Although I did hear the same when Vista came out, and we all know how that turned out! For all my general work and control machines, I still use Windows XP, rock solid, lean, and just...

Darwins 15"Duplex oil pump from WW2 tunnels

I'd certainly be interested Ken! I'd have to rely on buying a casting set off you though mate if that's alright? As my pathetic little furnace has given up the ghost (again!). Looks like a great project. cheers, Ian

    Humour

I went fishing one morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the...

    Search for a Laptop

I'm using them in a few machines/laptops inwhich the data isn't important, and I also built a machine to be my new cnc controller, but I chickened out and swapped it for a SATA drive. The throughput and MTBF rates are much, much improved over what they were just a couple of years ago, but I...

    Shop Tricks for Disabilities

My kids stir me for being short, so I think I'd need a step ladder to climb on that chair Ray, and I'm pretty sure I'd also immediately fall off! Hmmm, motorised chair, there's a thought! On a more serious note, the fortitude of some you guys really do make me feel bad when I whinge about...

    Search for a Laptop

I think my scotch must be too strong atm, because being in IT, I was glossing over the specs you posted, and just saw the 1TB of RAM! Took a fraction of a moment to sink in, but my instant thought was, My God man, what operating system are you running on that monster? Must be Vista :-) cheers, Ian

    Converting dfx files to. nc

Hi Darren, DXF's are vector drawings (such as Visio, AutoCAD, etc), whereas .nc files are ASCII text files containing the actual G-Code. What you'd normally do is use a program such as Aspire or similar, and import the DXF containing the raw objects and dimensions, you then need to generate the...
