Oil or Grease--needle roller brg. lube

Brian, no expert, but it seems to me if you add oil to the crankcase, might as well forget greasing the bearing. The oil will thin the grease, which will then run out with the oil and you are dependant upon a continuous supply of oil for the bearing. I think you would be better of with a seal...

    gear cutting with hob

I hobbed a 72 tooth gear using Gus's technique. It came out with too many teeth, so I adjusted the diameter, ending with 72 teeth. Hobbing two gears is child's play compared to making 72 gnashes, especially when I have no way to index the gear. Bill

    WW2 Japanese engine

It is not a Diesel, but the Holt engine in the link posted by Henry in post #13 is an awesome looking and running with terrific sound. It is even water cooled. Here is a video of one running. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy2CYju_sdE Bill

    Fuel question

You might want to read this before using acetylene fuel. http://douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/POWER/acetylene-eng/acetyleneeng.htm By the way, how in the world can a fuel be too powerful?? Bill

    Custom tap

Chuck - time to fess up. You needed the practice anyway. I made a 1/2-20 left hand tap in High School. As that was over 50 years ago, I think I should shut up and sit down. Bill

    Silver braze/solder

Well then, what are you doing? Welding? Or perhaps, just screwing around? Certainly not soldering. Bill

My Build of Stew's Overcrank Engine

That works! Being so compact, I figured it was a marine engine and never considered the possibility of indirect drive. Bill

    Silver braze/solder

This makes no sense to me. It states that in brazing, you do everything possible to promote capillary attraction and if this is not done, you are brazing. Or am I reading this wrong? Bill

    Fun with Worm-Gear drives

Brian, were you able to accurately predict the number of teeth? I made a 72 tooth wheel using that general technique, but took a few tries to get exactly what I wanted, both in shape/depth and number of teeth. Needed a lot of "Kentucky Windage" to get the correct number of teeth. Bill

    Interesting Motorized Bicycle

Interesting contraption. Looks and sounds like it has enough blow-by for two or three engines! Bill

My Build of Stew's Overcrank Engine

Thanks for the post. It is always good to see a well executed engine, especially one that is a bit different. Is there a functional need for the small flywheel? It looks so small it appears it would not contribute much. Looks great, though. Bill

    Double-Acting Twin-Beam Engine done

Love the layout, it allows a gearhead (especially a newly minted one) to see all the "action". Bill

    Phllip Duclos Bio

Incredible craftmanship. I found the collection to be very emotional. Awe, inspiration and intimidation. The Root family deserves a huge thank you for sharing this mans creations. Not many of us would be willing to give up such a collection. Bill

    Harbor Freight Customer Service.

I have never had a problem at HF. Sales people have always been great. Yes, some of the merchandise is crap, but just what can you expect when you pay less than five bucks for a set of ratchet wrenches? I've found their more realistically priced stuff to be of decent and sometimes very good...

    Photobucket pics not in order???

Not only are they not is order, the order can change. Have no idea how to combat this, other than to drop Photobucket. I'm going good to be able to upload photos, so am lost at sea when comtemplating such problems. In other words, I just "sucked it up". Seems I do that a lot these days. Bill

    Shop Schedule

Right on! Happens to me all the time. When I can't find something, I mentally retrace my steps. About 90% of the time, I realize I have not moved out of my present footprints for the past hour and I had the damn thing in my hand just 5 minutes ago. Bill

What to do with 58 tooth worm wheels?

I was able to hob 72 teeth, using a shop made hob. Calculating the correct blank diameter proved impossible. Had to make a couple of gears before getting the desired result. The results seemed to be technique sensitive. In other words, make it the same way each try, changing only the blank...
