    Chuck run out

Thanks Shop Shoe,, Not sure what happened to my reply, it vanished so will try again. Yes I did use a test bar in the chuck. I used some 1/4" bars from an old printer they clock up ok in the lathe but not on the mill. I then removed the assembled arbor, chuck & test bar from the mill gripped the...

    Chuck run out

Hi all, I have a Sieg SX2.3 Mill and just learning how to. I put the supplied 1-16mm-JT6 Drill chuck in and was surprised at the run out with a 4" test bar (home made in a lathe). What would be an acceptable error ?. The mill is new and I contacted the supplier for some help. They came back...

iGaging EZ-View DRO Plus for my LMS 3900 Mill

Hi Todd, Just read your post and headed off to the shed to see if I could do the same on my mill. I'm still learning how to stuff up end mills, lose count on the dials and generally make mistakes. Good fun. Anyway I have a Sieg SX 2.3 and thought a 3 axis DRO would make things a lot easier...

    Vertical Mill Slide

Thanks ALL for your comments. After much reading & watching countless videos I ended up biting the bullet & ordered a SIEG SX2.3 with R8 spindle. It seems a bit more robust then other SIEGS in my price range. Only time will tell if it was a correct decesion. Anybody else got one of these ?. Kpar

    Vertical Mill Slide

Thanks Bazmak & Goldstar, Yes I have a pedestal drill stand about 10 years old a cheepy back then. A good suggestion in getting rid of it and get a mill. Vertical Mill Slide

I'll answer my own post Hare & Forbes got back to me and basically said to forget about a mill vice for the AL 320 G as almost impossible to adapt. Best option buy a mill. Problem is no room in the shed. Kpar

    Vertical Mill Slide

Hi all, my last post got me sorted out so now another. I realise most of you all have separate Mills and maintain that using the lathe as a mill is not ideal, but back in my younger days all my Dad had was a lathe and he used to do a fair bit of milling with it. Anyway I'm going to try. First...

    AL-320 G Help

Thanks everybody, especially rodw it makes me feel a lot better that it's not the machine but the material. I'm from the old school & my Dad always told me if i wanted to make something tough and to last, use old axle steel. I do still have an issue with the cross feed nut always backing off...

    AL-320 G Help

Thanks for your input XD351, Yes I had another go at the cross slide and I believe there is a binding of the dial it is binding on the housing. I've checked all potential movements with the compound, spindle bearings and yes i do lock the carriage when parting off heavy metals. I've still got a...

    AL-320 G Help

Thanks Cogsy, you may be correct in a couple of points, yes I do take it a bit too steady with the feed, especially with old axle steel and with 30 mm dia I run about 250rpm is this too slow ?. I guess the cross feed nut could back off when I back off with the feed. Maybe I should get some HSS...

    AL-320 G Help

I've had this Lathe for some time and have enjoyed making a few trinkets to get some machining practice. I've always had some difficulty in parting off and I'm now up to my 3rd tip holding blade and is getting a bit frustrating. Done a lot of reading up and have followed these tips from others...

Rod, new chap here. I also have an Al-320 G- L141 and would like to fit a2 axis DRO. It's like buying milk "too many choices". Anyway after looking at your installation my lathe maybe a bit different as there is oiling points and adjusters on the tailstock side of the cross feed. Was this an...
