    broacning press

Rab You could charge the bottom of the cylinder with oil, then throttle the escaping oil. That will give you a controlled speed, I use the reverse on my hydraulic press. I used a 4 inch double acting hydraulic cylinder with a hand pump acting on the top side of the cylinder, its slow but...

    broacning press

Rab try loading the cylinder then releasing the load quickly. When your broaching the load on the cylinder will increase till it begins to cut, at that point the load will instantly decrease as static friction is overcome, at that time the air will expand and drive the cylinder fast really fast...

Opinions on power connections for home shop machines

Mike The panel breaker can be used as an on/off switch if its within sight of the machine, if that applies in your case. I have a solid state phase converter wall mounted and hard wired to the panel with a 50 amp breaker. The inspector said no problem using the breaker for an on/off as it was in...

Opinions on power connections for home shop machines

Mike I prefer a soft cord and plug. Im not sure if hard wired is code unless the machine is bolted down. Maybe a lathe or milll is considered heavy enough to be permanent. The plug gives me an extra degree of security if I have to work on the electrics of the machine. Unplug it and I know I...

spot facing cylinder end of base

was looking for something else and ran across the jig. Hope this helps make some sense of the previous post. Greg

spot facing cylinder end of base

The plans that came with mine showed a neat jig for the crank, maybe they deleted it. You turned the mains first and milled the throws to size. The jig was a section of round shaft about 2 inch dia. You milled a slot through the center, across the face the same size as the crank throw. Then...

spot facing cylinder end of base

Techonehundred, that is a PM#1 being machined. I had to work with what I had, even if it is a little large. Greg

    Rhodes Shaper!!!!

Very nice. The slotter attachment looks neat. My Logan shaper gets used as a slotter quite a bit cutting internal keyways. Wonder how long it would take to set up though, looks like the ram comes off then replaced on the slotter attachment. The table looks different than the link, bigger, is it...

    Lathe Headstock Bearing Replacement Recommendations?

I'd recommend staying with the original bearings. Tapered roller bearings are generally used in pairs with preload, a radial load outside the pair results in an axial load that is carried by the second bearing. The higher the contact angle in the bearing the greater the resulting axial load. In...

    Atlas Shaper Direction of Rotation

Don't know what its called, for lack of the correct word, the crank should rotate so that its pushing the ram on the top of the stroke. The return being on the bottom actually has the ram travelling faster on the back stroke. Greg

    Bentonite as a furnace lining?

Don't mean to steal this thread, but a quick question as firebrick has been mentioned. I have access to a bunch that was removed from an incinerator at a hospital, they.re the heavier type, guess not as good at insulating. They've been outside for some time, but not split from water freezing in...

    I stole a lathe!!!

Coming along nice Holt. Mine only got enough TLC to get it working. Would sure appreciate a sketch of those oilers, they turned out nice and mine needs them. Thanks Greg

    Setting up a VFD?

I personally like conduit, have the whole shop wired with it. The pvc stuff is super easy to work with, need a 90 you just buy one and glue it in. If you need to add a plug just cut the conduit and add a box. I ran 220 and 110 circuits through one 1/2 inch tube. Make sure you run 12 gauge for...

    Rolling Mill

OOPs, sorry wrong beast, didn't read the initial post or look close enough at the other posts. Greg

    Rolling Mill

I built this one quite some time ago. The rolls are about 14 inch wide made from heavy wall 4in pipe. The two fixed rolls need to be connected with a chain drive or they'll spin on the material. Also small dia rollers seem to spin. I've rolled full width 5/16 plate with no effort.

    Stuart No. 4 build

I use a pipe tap in the end of the mandrel, the corresponding pipe plug expands the mandrel. The hex socket head plugs leave the face of the mandrel flush. Greg

Looking for 500 lb chain fall found article!!!!

The principal of the mechanism isn't obvious at first glance. I've used them, the commercial ones have cast gears that grip hoisting chain. The mechanical advantage is so great that they don't need a locking mechanism to hold the load. By the formula in the link, the 11 and 10 tooth sprockets...

    Other names for way wipers

Holt Yes its a Student model but altered for Canada, all the fasteners are imperial rather than Wentworth. Think it was from the late 50's. I bought it as government surplus, came out of a defence research lab, not a lot of wear but was badly neglected. The wipers had been removed for some...
