Current HMEM logo photo inspires another Owen Mate dirivative

Managed to find time to make the muff - made it attached to a mandrell off the end of it to hold it as I had given the muff a taper and didn't want to mar its finish in the jaws of the chuck. Worked out pretty well. Made it look a bit different to the other Owen Mate muffs. Yet to finish the...

Boll Aero - my first engine build

6mm v 5mm is a 20% increase which will slow the gas passage down a bit - but in imho I don't think it will matter one iota, the engine is not a fire breathing hodrod, where such things will affect performance. In fact I've just looked at the plans again and the inlet holes determine the gas...

Boll Aero - my first engine build

James, The process I use that I was taught to me by David Owen and is in fact on his Owen Mate plans. For the cylinder you make a simple lap and use diamond paste to lap the inside of the bore. The lap is machined to about a thou undersize then a blind hole is drilled and tapped one end. A...

Current HMEM logo photo inspires another Owen Mate dirivative

I feel very privileged to have an engine I built some time ago as the current photo adjacent to the HMEM logo. It comes from a thread I started back in August last year and can be found at Link removed as error - see linka couple of paragraphs below ... I haven't had much time for building...

Boll Aero - my first engine build

Roboguy, just had a look at the drawings - 10 thou off centre will be ok in my opinion. You might have to relieve a tiny bit of the inner sidewall bottom of cylinder one side of crankcase for conrod clearance, but this is normal in most engines anyway. Make sure you mark out front and back...

Boll Aero - my first engine build

OK Roboguy, Here is my BollAero .. about a couple of hours running now on 2nd piston/cylinder combination after David Owen showed my me how to get a great fit with these components. Video is of one stopping and restart with 1 flick - did this 10 consecutive times ! A wonderful first engine to...

Boll Aero - my first engine build

Roboguy, Congratulations, the BollAero is a wonderful engine to start with. I too made that as my first engine and there has been a few more since then. If you don't have a good Mill, then marking out is crucial and one trick I have learned is to use a simple sewing needle, put it in a drill...

Simple Opposed Twin Diesel using Owen Mate Components

Well after making the the rear disc and then the holes a beautiful snug fit for the pins in both the crankshaft and the rear disc and then assembling it, I found that it doesn't work. You know how there is so little movement of a piston at TDC, well I think that is what conspires to work...

Simple Opposed Twin Diesel using Owen Mate Components

I haven't posted here for a while as other things have been taking priority. But I have started down the path of my next diesel, a 4cc opposed twin based on the wonderful piston/cylinder design of David Owen's - Owen Mate. Just for fun calling it the HOLLY OWEN OPPOSED TWIN - or HOOT for short...

    Another ML Midge

Steve, Used to ream them but too inconsistent in sizing. What I do now, is make the hole with an ordinary drill slightly smaller than the piece of drill rod I intend to use as the pin, I then machine the pin to about a thou bigger than the hole and press it in. Another advantage of this...

    Another ML Midge

Thanks Goldstar ... A lot, maybe most, of the plans we used as youngsters or should I say when we were younger are now available on Outerzone. http://www.outerzone.co.uk/ Simply a case of downloading the one or ones you want onto a memory stick, taking to your favourite...

    Another ML Midge

Done about 10 flights now with the modified Midge in my Veron Cardinal. This model started out with a standard Midge and it was very marginal on power, now it is a perfect match. One small thing haven't got on top of is that it wants to "grab" a bit on one side of BDC. I have had it apart...

    60 degree Vee Twin 1.6cc

Neils, would be good for sure to compare a 90 to a 60 Vee Twin. I have other projects (an old Lotus Elite and giving the Brabham BT6 a birthday) lined up for next year or more so won't be able to build too much over this time frame, although I snuck in a few hours this morn on my .5cc engine ...

New design - 0.5cc model aircraft diesel maybe call it "the Gecko"

Managed to sneak some lathe time today, mainly to try out my new 5inch 4jaw self centring chuck and 300mm linear scale. Both were terrific, the linear scale used to great effect as a depth gauge. Note the digital window has sticky tape over it to read the numbers clearly, and the sticky tape...

New design - 0.5cc model aircraft diesel maybe call it "the Gecko"

With a fascination for small diesels, and their ability to power really small model aircraft, there came the desire to design and build one from scratch. After some doodling, have come up with the design parameters using the time honoured principle of keep it simple. I did build an ED Baby...

    60 degree Vee Twin 1.6cc

Neils, Gail, you have opened my eyes somewhat to the true power of this 4cc Vee Twin. If you go back to my first post in this thread, I estimated that the efficiency of a 60 degree Vee Twin would be 75% that of a single. Now the Owen Mate is 2cc, the Vee Twin Mate is double at 4cc. Neils...

    60 degree Vee Twin 1.6cc

Have just run a back to back test on the Owen Mate original and the Owen Mate Vee Twin or as I referred to it here the V-HOT. Using an 11 x 4 Turnigy wood prop the Owen Mate gave 6500 rpm and the Vee Twin gave 7350 rpm. After running the Vee at the Cowra Oily Hand weekend have wanted to do a...

    Sharing our best non-standard practices.

One of the nicest ways to make an exhaust port in the side of a cylinder is to use a simple slitting saw. You can buy them in various thicknesses and diameters. It is simple to make a mandrel to hold them. Be just a bit careful as the swarf will look like it hasn't broken through as it gets...

A different Owen Mate - lets call it an Owen Mate MkII

Hi Don, Seeing it was my 2nd engine, ( of 12 now of which three with two cylinders) and I was all enthused and made quite a file on the build - it's attached here. Would do the piston a lot different now, bring it down to 3 thou big and using finer grades of wet and dry bring it down to 2 or 3...
