    Myford's metal lathes

I think the important bit of advice here is that the lathe chosen should fit within a persons expectations. That is without knowing the size of the e Bob to be built

Bazmak - A chinese mini linisher

Well it looks like you got an interesting machine there. I hope you get better performance than I get out of an old Grizzly import running a 1” band. The motor has no where near the required power. It can’t even do passable work on a tiny wood block. This is one reason why I want to build...

Bazmak - A chinese mini linisher

Actually I bought a pillar drill, brand new of all things, and actually see that as a mistake trying to outfit a shop. The money would have been better spent on a mill. This has me wondering what would be the accepted way to grow a shop.

    Dykem Hi-spot

Exactly this when scraping. On a well ground surface you will not get the low spots thus a good portion of the bluing rubs off. If there are low spots the bluing is so thin that no contrast is there to be seen. The OP may simply have a piece that is too flat to leave high contrast highlights...

    Seig sx2 board faults

I don’t believe there is a repair section so this will have to do. Perfect timing on their part! . Yeah but know not funny to you. As XD mentioned do realize that this is power circuitry and thus can literally kill you. The first thing that comes to mind is how did you determine which...

    Plywood Machine table question

I would say yes. The reason though is the same as it’s use in counter tops. That is it prevents direct moisture absorption of the underlying wood product. This can be very important if you are using water based coolants. I don’t know how you operate your machine so can’t say much about...

    Dykem Hi-spot

Maybe the surface is too flat to leave blue. As someone mentioned above the idea with bluing is to find the high spots that get polished off with the blue left in the low spots. Also ground surfaces are often hard to read giving very low contrast.

Mechanical And Metal Trades Handbook (Tabellenbuch Metall)

You can actually find CAD files on other manufactures web sites but it isn’t always easy! The “registration” non sense seems to be popular too. This registration requirement is even frustrating at work due to never needing items in volume. The last thing I need is more “marketing material”...

    Making shim washers

The best way to put holes in shim stock is with a punch set designed for that need. Most of the sets I’ve seen are expensive and you still get a tiny burr. Expect to need to deburr with any approach you take. You could make your own punch and die. For one off this wouldn’t even need to...

    Mill Vise Selection Saga...(OMG)

First off if the screw in your current vise isn’t the right size why not get the right screw? I’m not sure how you can blame the shop if a used vise had problems, would you buy a used car without an inspection? That said screw less vises in the 3-4” range work well in these smaller...

    Hydraulic Knockout Punches UK/ Metric

Wow that is a stiff price on Greenlee punches. One option here is to make your own punch sets. That way you can thread them for whatever thread you need. You actually have me wondering what thread size Greenlee uses in the USA. The pitch is fine, well finer that what you would expect...

    Can some one help me

The bandsaw route is the way to go. I like to mix my metal working up with a bit of steel fabrication work and frankly a bandsaw was one of the best investments I've made. Prior to the bandsaw I used just about every thing under the sun to cut stock. That includes a jig saw, a Sawzall...

    Shop lights

There is a way to damage ones eyes with high intensity LED's but you will not find them in video monitors. This article highlights some issues: https://www.photonics.com/Articles/High-Power_LEDs_Pose_Safety_Hazards/a28351 but unfortunately dives into the "blue is bad" nonsense. High...

Stroboscopic Tachometer app for iPhones - Great for finding RPM’s of your spindle

Thanks for the suggestion, just downloaded the app today. Yes a little late but that is what happens when you are still working for a living.

Mechanical And Metal Trades Handbook (Tabellenbuch Metall)

Thanks for the link to the Handbook! As for pulleys you might want to look on the web sites of the major belt manufactures and look for the engineering manuals. I seem to remember one of them having a pretty good description of pulley requirements (could have been Poly V, its been a long...

    DIY / Hybrid lathe build

Hey Dave; Its been awhile since I have logged in so I've missed this post. It looks like you have started one interesting venture here, please follow up with operational results. Frankly I'd fear swarf plugging up that channel cut into the tooling plate. Even so love to hear if the result...

Information about the Emco Maximat V10 lathe

Sad to hear! This has happened to me so many times.

    Slot cutting question

I'd strongly suggest a very low RPM. I'm not sure of the allow but if it is one that work hardens real fast you will want a very low SFPM. That and use a steady feed rate that keeps all teeth cutting. Use a SFPM of less than half of what you would use for mild steel. I'd keep the...

    Hydraulic Knockout Punches UK/ Metric

The only knock out punches I've used are Greenlee and mostly in inch sizes. They do make metric punches. If you need one specific size I'd simply order a Greenlee punch in the size needed. I would be surprised if there isn't a similar high quality manufacture in the UK. As for Chinese...

    Lapping machine for piston rings

You got some nice results but I have to ask, is that machine built out of glass?
