What is this used this for?

He did say, 'weird pantograph things that measured areas'.

What is this used this for?

A polar planimeter, I used one for a few months to measure road building cross sections during winter when the ground was frozen too hard to survey.

Expand the "Home Foundry and Castings Section" ?

I agree, if there are different sub-categories, users would have to go to those categories to see 'new to them' ideas, I know I've seen things I wouldn't have searched out without them being all in the same place.

    Preserve spare tools

I use LPS-3 that I get from KBC but have also used the cans of Krown rust preventative oil. I've had machined mild steel parts stored with the LPS-3 for a couple of decades(don't ask why) in unheated storage without issue.

    Help with Arduino idexer

Is it possible to keep track of the rounding errors and insert a correction at appropriate times?

    Help with Arduino idexer

Might I suggest posting the good, working sketch somewhere/in the download files section, so it's available as the original seems to be gone?

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

There are several places where you can buy the book online but it's also free for download at archive.org

Using a microwave oven to harden a sodium silicate core.

Having very limited experience with casting, all I can add is this study I found. https://scholarsmine.mst.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3675&context=masters_theses#:~:text=The%20first%20reaction%20between%20sodium,decomposition%20of%20the%20alkaline%20silicate.

    316 Stainless steel cutting

Just a guess, but from the application it's likely 304 stainless.

    316 Stainless steel cutting

Agricultural usage is a pretty broad description, do you know roughly what he part is or what it's from?

    316 Stainless steel cutting

I have both GWizard and HSMAdvisor and they are not related other than they have speeds and feeds calculators and engineering information like weights calculators and tap drill size charts, etc., each has it's strong points.

    316 Stainless steel cutting

There is a feed/speed calculator, GWizard that is free for hobby size machines, it takes a bit of learning to get the right speeds and feeds for your particular machines but overall, it will get you in the ballpark right away. One of the first settings is conservative/aggressive slider, just...

Cutting oils What do you use?

WD-40 in the spray cans works for cutting 3/4"/20mm aluminum plate with a portable circular saw with a carbide blade, very noisy, requires hearing protection, face mask and something to keep the chips out of the back of your neck as you're cutting, and a second person similarly equip using the...

    Sleeve questions

Yes, it is in inches. Even though Canada has ostensibly been metric for decades, I still think in Imperial measure.

Cutting oils What do you use?

In the first shop I worked in, there was an old bottle of white lead for use on solid centers, but even then, in the early 70s, it was not supposed to be used, lead is toxic and the heat from using it for machining would make it into a mist/aerosol so you'd breath it in. Probably NOT a good...

    Sleeve questions

FWIW, my 3D printed version of the Elmer Verberg Baldy uses a printed piston in a brass sleeve, it has almost no reciprocating weight and runs well. I'd say it depends on how much you intent to run it.

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

Brian, considering the volume of the cylinder, would a $20, 0-100 psi oil filled pressure gauge not be better for checking compression, or in this case valve leak, the volume of the line from the test point to the gauge is many times the cylinder volume?

Cutting oils What do you use?

For threading aluminum and even some machining, Relton A-9, your wife might even like the smell though it would be fairly expensive.

    Demon V8 water jackets

A woodruff cutter is a key cutter, just a different name, they are numbered by diameter and width of cut.
