I know that engine! I had a neighbour who built one, and it used to sit on top of his fireplace. I don't think he ever had his own machinery, so his was probably built during his time with Handley-Page. He reckoned as an engine, it was the "screamer" of its day. His cylinder, piston and head...

    Small digital tach

You could do a lot worse than looking at Minimag Co's offering... It's microscopic!

It appeals to me, though I suspect I might be a frustrated steampunk...

    Kiwi Mk II

Nice work! Nice to see curves, too... When I make these sort of items (on my engine, the float bowl cap, and the oil and fuel adjustment screws) I always dish the faces with a radius form tool- like the thumbwheels on old microscopes! The "fart valve" cover was too small for that, so I domed it...

    A 15cc sidevalve opposed twin

Magnetic stirrers (pills or fleas in lab tech slang) are cheap enough to buy- but the hotplates with the motorised magnet generally aren't. I was looking at them the other day for some reason. However, when I was a lab tech, I scrapped dozens of dud hotplates, (ammonium chloride kills them) but...

    A 15cc sidevalve opposed twin

Have you considered using an old saucepan and using the whole tank as the anode, Peter? You've got stainless steel, aluminium and copper to choose from. Another thought is to use an automotive washer pump- 12 volts, gear type with plastic workings and low out put. Ditto for using a wiper motor...

boiler explosion. what not to do.

Absolutely. For reservoirs and such, test tubes. For boiler gauge glass, I buy from the specialist supply houses. I like my bollocks just where they are!

boiler explosion. what not to do.

I'm not going to contest what steamchick wrote, but for labs, test tubes are a throw away item. Pyrex is heat resistant and strong. Silica glass in education and industry is "old hat" these days, and if you're anywhere near a high school, and ring 'em, you'll probably get a lifetime's supply for...

    Counterweighting with "heavy metal"

Ytrose2- I made lead soldiers when I was a kid, old saucepan on a stove, just like you. Dunno, but I'm sure somwon wud hav sed if I was geting stupider...

    Counterweighting with "heavy metal"

Thank you all for the advice! Lead ain't a problem, I've loads of it... But I'll be ringing engine recon shops tomorrow...

    Bell mouthed chuck

As Charles has said, you cannot remedy a concentricity problem. (By the way, Charles, I loved your Seagull build!) The regrinding of jaws is hard to explain in text, but you'll find it under "clover leaf" in the files section of the drummondlathe.io newsgroup. It's public. The method is self...

boiler explosion. what not to do.

All the above works great with silica glass. Unfortunately, all my raw material came via a chemistry lab, and these techniques just don't work with Pyrex. I tried! Scoring and cracking over a matchstick, no. Scoring right around with a carbide blade? No. Filling with oil, then spinning against a...

    Counterweighting with "heavy metal"

Thanks, Mark, I'll do that. I still need to find somewhere that'll supply small quantities, though... -Andrew UK

    Counterweighting with "heavy metal"

Much as I love the music genre, this is a quite serious question, as some designs, the "Matador 10cc" in this case calls out for "heavy metal" inserts to be incorporared into the crank counterweight. If the designer was referring to tungsten, I'm sure the drawings would have called tungsten out...

    LONGBOY'S MODEL ENGINE COMPILATION 2017-2021!

Love the engines! A bit of brass and copper improves the appearance every time! Do you build them for powering stuff, or for the satisfaction of seeing them run?

    Hello from Canada.

I'll give them a go. Thank you!

    Hemmingways V8

The camshaft for this engine as drawn is incorrect. A member on one of the newsgroups (WhittleV8) has recently completed his engine, and it seems that the lobes for one of the banks are out of phase. I'm sure he will post the solution. That is the main "glitch" that I am aware of. Other group...

Sight glass for fuel tanks etc

Lab glassware comes in all shapes and sizes, and doesn't cost much. All my sight glasses and oil reservoirs are made from cut down pyrex test tubes. they come in many sizes. My set up is as per the photo- dremel drill in the toolpost; the lathe rotates at a low reverse speed, with the bed...
