    Silver soldering rod for boiler

It's called conventional milling versus climb milling. Apparently Quinn is well aware of the difference as she talked about it in-length at the beginning of this tutorial video from several years ago: Climb milling is very handy for cleaning-up and getting a good finish after a heavy cut, you...

    Silver soldering rod for boiler

Good, we have some experience here. I think it would make it easier to follow in this thread if we separate the boilers into two camps, the small <30 PSI stationary boilers used to power the steam engines that Nikhil mentioned in his original post and larger >30 PSI boilers used in ride able...

    Silver soldering rod for boiler

Has anyone here made their own boiler for model steam engines? Minh Thanh, any of the PM engines you mention should be able to turn-over on a very little amount of pressure, say a few PSI if built correctly. You need higher boiler pressure to perform work. For myself, for low-pressure (<30...

1916 65 HP Case Traction Engine 1/16 Scale

If you want something for your tractor to power, you could model a Baker fan. Many of them are made of wood so you could knock one out while working on your Barbie bed. They are a simple way of putting a working load on your steam engine. I need to make one myself. Grabbed this nice picture...

My next build--A cross beam vacuum engine

Just buy denatured alcohol at the paint/home improvement store. The can will probably also be marked as fuel for marine stoves. It's what I use to get my kerosene pressure lanterns started. That is, of course, assuming it's not banned in Canada as it is in California.

You want to stick with good denatured alcohol. Try adjusting your wicks. You can also try Doug's draft fan.: https://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/threads/building-rudys-steam-tractor.3838/post-45019 Different burner designs:

Looks like a current model. I would contact Mitutoyo and see what they say.

South Bend 10K Lathe T-Slot Cross Slide

Too late for that now! :p Here's a copy of South Bend's internal QC checklist that was performed on each lathe before it went out the door. Some of the things Pete mentioned are checked. The ANSI B 5.16-1962 standard is referenced in the checklist. I would like to view the entire document...

South Bend 10K Lathe T-Slot Cross Slide

I'm aware of the lathe alignments you mention, but I don't agree that the cross slide machined above has much to do with any of this. The lathe saddle has the dovetails that provide the alignment with the bed and spindle and the cross slide is just along for the ride using the alignment of those...

Don't forget, the flat surface of this new cross slide is an excellent place to put the cutting oil cup! ;)

South Bend 10K Lathe T-Slot Cross Slide

I think since even the "money-is-no-object" toolroom lathes from Monarch or Hardinge didn't bother with a combination compound/t-slot cross slide it wasn't a price issue, but factories in the states just bought an additional 2nd ops lathe or other machine for the t-slot work. You could order a...

South Bend 10K Lathe T-Slot Cross Slide

I have a Grizzly G0678. Paula posted a very good build article on this cross slide at the PM forum years ago. https://www.practicalmachinist.com/forum/threads/machining-a-t-slotted-cross-slide.177054/ She had no problems using a small-ish mill. In her build, she used a face mill and I did as...

    Changing Lathe

Unfortunately, you need to sign-up for a Facebook account to use Marketplace. It's doesn't cost money, but it's annoying. https://www.junglescout.com/blog/how-to-sell-on-facebook-marketplace/

    Changing Lathe

I noticed in your post that you were selling your lathe with the aid of a listing on CraigsList. Around here, about 90% of the traffic seems to have moved to Facebook Marketplace. If you are having trouble moving it, that may be part of the problem.

South Bend 10K Lathe T-Slot Cross Slide

Mostly wrapped-up a long term (for me) project by getting a MLA S-4382 T-Slot Cross Slide machined and installed on my South Bend 10K lathe. This was a raw casting kit from Metal Lathe Accessories. http://mlatoolbox.com/S-4382.html I had this casting on hand for almost 8 years now and finally...

    Battery Jacks

You are exactly correct on your soldering technique. I was taught to "throw the heat to it" and not screw around when soldering electrical connections. Like you, I mainly use a chisel point tip for maximum heat transfer. One of my better tool investments was when I bought a Weller WES51...

    Battery Jacks

The electric RC people and HAM's optimized low voltage, high amperage connectors awhile ago. Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder, however. Anderson PowerPoles are supposed to be high quality, but I think you need a special crimper for installation. I've never used them. I currently use...
