    Trouble-shooting a new Stirling

The (not so) secret sauce to my Stirling and Flame Licker engines is Kano Kroil from Kano Labs www.kanolabs.com or Amazon. It stands up to the high heat, doesn't get gummy, and is considerably thinner than WD-40. Piston fit should be gas-tight with no drag. All mechanisms, joints, etc...

    I'm generally confused, any help?

Given the age of the engine, most-likely it would have had a simple "mixer" rather than a carburetor. Here's a link to a 1936 Popular Mechanics engine, The Midget. A mixer is a simple venturi and needle valve similar to the old control line airplane engines. Here's the link...

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

Ved, Sounds like a plan. I know I've set aside projects for a while, putting them into a "Thinking Stage." Thinking is good. If you're ever in my neck of the woods and want to spend an afternoon in the shop working on it, let me know. I'm happy to help. Todd.

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

Ved. You're probably not too far from having it running. Several things are a must - Zero drag on anything, timing, enough heat. The prototype took me about 7 months from "completion" to running; however, this included completely redesigning the displacer piston as a regenerator. At that...

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

Hello Ved, The video linked here should give you a good idea of the fit on mine. Also check for leaks around the displacer rod. I use Kroil as a lubricant in my Stirling and flame licker engines as it is super-thin; can take the heat; and doesn't gum up in storage. I use a dab of...

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

"There is an apparent leak at the bottom of the spout." Ved, Before resoldering, etc. check to make sure you didn't overfill the burner. The spout of the little tea pot is lower than the cap. If you fill it to the rim, fuel will run out of the spout, down the neck to its base. BTW, regarding...

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

Ven. Great job on the regenerator. Thanks Dave. That was one of my changes from the original design and what ultimately got my prototype running. Happy to answer any questions about the design or what's going on there. Todd. Littlelocos Model Engineering www.littlelocos.com

    Essex Caloric Engine Build

Hello Ven, I'm just finding your series in the last week or so and will continue to follow along. Great job so far! The piston fit is absolutely critical to the engine running well. I use an expanding lap purchased from McMaster Carr. Here's the link to the 1" diameter lap. Turn the OD to...

Cole's Power Models - What is going on there?

I would also advise to contact the folks at Cabin Fever Expos. BTW, Last year I contacted Coles and to my understanding the whole lot of the operating side was/is for sale -- as a lot -- for one figure, without an inventory of what comes with it or the desire (or possibly ability) to go...

    Sleeve Valve IC engines?

Here's the link to RCV engines. I haven't visited their Web site in a while. They've expanded into several different fields beyond just model airplane engines. Enjoy! Todd. http://www.rcvengines.com/rcv_modelhome.htm

    3D printed sand molds

Back on topic... The foundry I use in York, PA, Cochrane Foundry actually receives large (on the order of several feet on a side) printed sand molds from Detroit via truck shipment. They cast the part and ship it back. They are currently considering spending on the order of $500k-$600k...

WTB Morse Taper 4.5 to Morse Taper 3 Adapter

I have a 1920's Sebastian Gold Seal lathe with a MT#4.5 also. When I first got that lathe, I bought one of the Grizzly MT#4.5 adapters and quickly found that it is NOT an MT#4.5, but most likely a Jarno #11. Checked my e-mail sent file and found the following...

    Scratch built 4 cylinder

Nicely done! Nothing like the feeling of a newly completed engine on that first run. Warning - this is highly addictive. Of course you've already figured that out and are probably planning your next build. :-) Thanks for posting. Todd.

anyone else use the new tool auction site

Checked it out. Agreed, sure doesn't look like much. I think I'm gonna hold off until they either get a better following or go away. Thanks for the tip, Todd.
