    Filtering molten cast iron.

Those molds in cold-set or no-bake sand look very nice! Could I ask what material you're using and for a possible source? I haven't been able to find these materials in manageable quantities. Thanks! Todd.

Trying to get flame licker to run

I see that you're using denatured alcohol. Just confirming that this is the stuff from the paint aisle at the hardware store and not the stuff from the drug store. The latter is 30% water and won't burn hot enough. Also, my magic elixer is Kano Kroil. (Aerokroil, from kanolabs.com, also...

    Casting kit business?

Here are two filaments to consider. I'm currently setting up for lost wax to do small detail parts for my engines. This is in addition to the oil-sand process we're currently set up for. https://stacker3d.com/product/i-beam-blue-wax-pla-casting-filament-for-3d-printers-1-75mm-1kg/...

    Casting kit business?

Paul published one of them, "Scrapbox" in Live Steam. Another design, "The Green Mill Engine" was never published. I have the original design sketches, article manuscript, and prototype for the Green Mill Engine and have rendered it for release as a collaborative construction article. I also...

    Cabin Fever Expo 2022 - 25th

Gary has a good point. Joy and I are thinking about making the trek from Maryland to the Black Hills show as well. According to MapQuest, it's 1,542 miles.

    Cabin Fever Expo 2022 - 25th

From the Friday evening Vendor's Meeting, the on-line format is here to stay. Cabin Fever Auctions does online auctions on average 2x per week during the year. The online format and their willingness to ship auction items has opened them up to a worldwide pool of bidders. As such, this format...

has the price of steam engine castings gone up with COVID

Gary, I've been doing smaller industrial and decorative patterns for the foundry as well. That's one of the reasons they are still willing to work with my small orders. Unfortunately, patternmakers are getting fewer and further between as well. I could easily spend most of my evenings and...

has the price of steam engine castings gone up with COVID

Gary, well said. We are seeing the same thing here in our area on the East Coast. For us, it's on a much smaller scale than you guys and even more difficult to get things cast in small quantities. For the few, small foundries left, they are running like mad. The small foundry we work with is...

Chinese 4 stroke model camshaft repair advice

Steve, I agree wholeheartedly. As someone who is in the business of supporting this hobby, I've worried about this for years. As long as folks aren't worried about where their stuff comes from the cheap knock-offs from the Near and Far East will continue to be popular. Even for those of us...

Chinese 4 stroke model camshaft repair advice

Dave, The problem is that neither the Kerzel or the Upshur designs were in the public domain. The Kerzel plans were explicitely released for non-commercial use and the Chinese violated that. Dave has addressed this previously. Todd.

Parsell & Weed Hit & Miss

Ken. So sorry for the loss of your friend. Let me know if I can be of any help in finishing up the P&W. Todd.

Parsell & Weed Hit & Miss

Here's a nice-running example. It was built in a month by a gentleman in Iowa. Enjoy! Todd.

Parsell & Weed Hit & Miss

Dave, That meet-up at NAMES is one of our most-memorable show happenings. We weren't exhibiting there yet and had the gentleman paged over the PA system. We had a great conversation after delivering the "goods." Todd.

Parsell & Weed Hit & Miss

Ken. I'm always glad to help. Kits run $250 and $225 for the horizontal and the vertical with castings in silicon bronze. I've also added an air cooled cylinder as an option to replace the separate collars, cylinder, and water jacket. That's a GREAT idea on using the tablet to help enlarge...

Parsell & Weed Hit & Miss

Dave, Just to let you know. I made numerous tweaks and changes to Woody's design before we released it as an LLME kit. Most-notable of these was redesigning the governor to be more scale-like along with reducing the compression ratio to 4:1. The new drawings still work with the original...

I'm also looking forward to the build and here to support if there are any questions on the kit or the drawings, etc. Enjoy! Todd.

    New Engine Coming from Littlelocos

@peterl95124, thanks for stopping by. We haven't added the air cooled engines to the web site yet. I'm definitely needing to take care of that. The drawing for them and the exploded view covering all four engines are attached here. I had a lot of fun with the exploded view. Enjoy!

    New Engine Coming from Littlelocos

I haven't worked on the engine since the Cabin Fever Show and need to sort out the valve leaks. This shouldn't take much. Here's a video I received from a builder of the water cooled version. He didn't bother with the cooling tank or the piping. We had a great time at Cabin Fever despite...

    New Engine Coming from Littlelocos

The flywheels and the rest of the castings are done in Silicon Bronze (C873 Everdur). They can be polished, painted, or given a patina.

    New Engine Coming from Littlelocos

With brass or bronze valve seats, it's best to mismatch the angles, making the seat about 1/2 degree (up to the one degree you mention) steeper than the valve so that outermost diameter of the the valve bears against the same area of the seat. For CI or steel seats, I like to lap these in...
