    Willans Blast Injection engine

Since I have already shown a couple of views of the cylinder heads, I might as well finish the set. This is the No. 2 head which has the air start valve fitted. Both the other heads are drilled for air start and have blanking plugs fitted to the holes. That is a 300mm/12 inch ruler laying across...

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Hello Mark, Oh if your friend can find any info we would be very glad to see it. Our engine is No D219 probably made in 1928 if he finds anything in that area. It was one of a pair D218/D219. I'm glad we are not working on your V12, it looks a bit big. Thanks, Ian.

    Willans Blast Injection engine

I apologise to wheelwright for not acknowledging his post before, but I just had another look at the video, and you can plainly see the movement of the eccentrics for a similar fuel pump just above the governor housing. Ian.

    Willans Blast Injection engine

I will get one, but I can tell you now that that is the fuel pump for this engine. It is mounted directly in front of, and driven by, eccentrics on the vertical shaft. One eccentric is the actual pump, while the other is controlled by the governor and is a bleed valve to control fuel pressure...

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Just for interest, I just found this. This is what our engine looked like just before we started on it; Not real pretty, is it? Ian.

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Frankly, no. I can only assume that there is some passageway to the water jacket for that cylinder, but what for I do not know. There is nothing similar on the Willans. Ian. Edit: It wouldn't contain any sort of oil supply for the camshaft gears?

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Next he showed us the rocker arms; Injector, air start, and inlet/exhaust, above in that order. We have assembled the heads, but the rockers are pretty obvious; This engine starts on one cylinder only, so the other two heads have only three rockers, Exhaust, injector, intake in order left to...

    Willans Blast Injection engine

In Nick's post #44 he treated us to the tiny pillar (2 per cylinder) that supports the rocker shaft; I have a bit more trouble holding the original; Ian.

    Willans Blast Injection engine

Sorry Nick, although Australia is metric I still think in feet and inches, and although this engine was made in England, 99% of it's dimensions are actually metric. That cylinder casting is about 2.5 metres high, plus about 0.5 metre for the engine base and another 0.5 metre for the cylinder...

    Willans Blast Injection engine

I believe it is 225hp so 75 per cylinder. Ian.

    MAN Diesel engine from 1907 "DM 2 * 100"

Ok, I have started over in the Break Room with my pictures. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/f16/willans-blast-injection-engine-19174/

    Willans Blast Injection engine

This thread is in support of MuellerNick and his project of making castings for a model of a MAN diesel. http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/f31/man-diesel-engine-1907-dm-2-100-a-19073/ The engine I have access to is a 1927 Willans 3-cylinder made in England. It was designed in 1911 and made...

    MAN Diesel engine from 1907 "DM 2 * 100"

Hi Nick, the engine I am working on is a 3 cylinder Willans made in England in 1927! However, it appears they designed it in 1911 and never upgraded the design. As all diesels being manufactured at this time (1911) had to be made to Herr Diesels licence or not at all, they all tend to be very...

    MAN Diesel engine from 1907 "DM 2 * 100"

This is just amazing! I find it very interesting as I am presently involved with the restoration of a 12" scale engine of almost identical design to the MAN. If anyone would like to see pictures of the full size components that Nick is modelling from, perhaps I could start a new thread in the...

    Bushfire/Wildfire

I am sure many of you will remember the devastating fires that raged through southern Australia in Feb 2007. Known locally as "Black Saturday", the fires claimed 173 lives and destroyed over 2000 homes. Whilst the loss of life can never be forgotten, many other things were destroyed as well...

    Rhombic drive hot-air engine

Hi dnp, this one came from Model Engineer mag starting in 30 September 2005. Ian

    Rhombic drive hot-air engine

Thanks Stew, the bearings came via my local "full size" bearing supplier. He had to do a bit of a catalogue search but finally decided he was able to get them. Only took about a week from memory. If you have enough old computer fans, they are the same ones usually. :)

    Rhombic drive hot-air engine

In my Welcome post I mentioned a hot-air engine I had made. Here are some pictures. The diagram shows the fundamental operation with the displacer shaft (con-rod?) passing through the centre of the power piston. The four small arms that form the rhombic drive have 3/8 x 1/8 ball bearings in each...
