John Deere Kit by Robert Best

Do you have the 1/2 scale 1 1/2HP kit? Approx. 10" Flywheels? If so I have the same kit, I will check to see if my plans are more complete. I plan on using a spark plug like the 1923 Engine had.

    Toolpost Needle Valve Grinder

I used this exact one from HF on the little toolpost grinder I made, it fits right into the Aloris style tool bit holder without any modification. I use diamond cutters instead of abrasive wheels that seem to bounce all over the place.

    Toolpost Needle Valve Grinder

I use my cordless drill to spin the needle stem against my 1" vertical belt sander. I also use this method to round off the corners of sharp pins & screws that I have cutoff.

How do i know its bronze..

Brass does not necessarily make a good bearing surface. Not all Bronze is bearing material either. I'm not quite sure why you need to know if its brass or bronze?? I have a bucket with left over brass & bronze scraps & the color seems to different on most every piece!

    Sears 109 lathe parts

Is this a Atlas lathe? The main bearings are bearing bronze, you could make them on your lathe!

    50 tooth gear info

Is the small arbor spindle rigid enough? Maybe a larger hub & a dead center would work better. Maybe it works fine if you are milling aluminum.

Material question; chromed brass tube keep or melt?

I would keep it, you can sand off the chrome in your lathe & end up with a nice brass tube when you need it. You should be able to get scraps for melting!

    Farm Boy - Crankshaft Material?

McMaster.com W1 Tool Steel works great for crankshafts. Don't even heat treat it. This stuff is cheap & ground smooth & straight.

    Where to buy tools

You can often find great tools on eBay. I have purchased used American made measuring tools for a fraction of new prices. The quality is far better than the cheap China made stuff!

    Cheap gage blocks...worth it??

Good gage blocks are lapped & designed to ring together when twisted. This will allow you to stack up several blocks without any accumulation of thickness. I have a set of the cheap imports & the finish is too rough to ring together. These are certainly good enough for the work I do! Oh! buy...

    Band saw blades.

Is this made to cut metal? Sounds like a wood cutting band saw. Does it have 3 small wheels, if so the metal blades don't like the small bending radius.
