Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

Brian, you're right, the only thing worse than batteries leaking and corroding your electronics is, wait..., there isn't anything worse than that !!!. but for me the big hassle is draining and flushing out all the water/coolant before winter storage, Pete.

    1898 Nash Two Cylinder Build

Raveney, looking good !!!, and many thanks for posting since the ShelfPetModels "Frisco Twin" is on my wish list but is no longer available and this looks to be a reasonable alternative. when I braze or weld fabricated parts I usually consider them as "castings" that need at least a little...

Vertical 4 cycle engine from recycled parts

Brian, your engine looks really cool, but I've started copying Paul Denham's style which is to mount all that stuff on the underside of the wood base, router/mill pockets for them 5/8 deep in 3/4 wood and AA batteries in a flat case and the electronic ignition circuit fit just fine and they are...

Save Our Model Engine Casting Heritage Project ("SOMECH")

GreenTwin, you have my total support and encouragement, preserving old casting kits as 3D models so they can be re-created has been a long time objective, some great kits no longer available include Shelfpet and Paul Breisch, there are many others as you are finding, keep up the great work :-) !!!

another Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine, 2/3 scale, bar stock

your build got me re-interested in finishing mine ! that's a shaft for a governor, my Stuart-9 governor fits on it and I'm making a duplicate, but I find it distracting from the Joy's Valve Gear which is supposed to be the focal point of the engine, so am undecided if it will be a permanent...

another Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine, 2/3 scale, bar stock

a funny thing about that, runs well on 30-psi without piston O-rings, today I installed the O-rings and it now takes 60-psi :-( !!! (so need to deepen the grooves a bit)

another Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine, 2/3 scale, bar stock

thanks!, yes I took the plunge in spite of the cost, and it took me a really long time to master aluminum TIG, the secret is I walk my aluminum parts down the street to Gary's house, he's a retired machinist now, but has been TIG welding aluminum since he was in high school :) !!!

another Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine, 2/3 scale, bar stock

and I got impatient and ran it on air even though I'm still waiting for O-rings for the pistons .!. (youtube link: https://youtu.be/wuDW5Z6qb10

another Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine, 2/3 scale, bar stock

this 2/3 scale Muncaster #9 Joy's Valve Engine is all built from bar stock, except the base, its "cast" from TIG :) !!! my original inspiration was Simon Fraser's 2/3 scale, but in hind sight probably should have done raveney's 1/2 scale. my base is 5 x 14+" and the reason I found Simon's...

    magnum 120 FS repairs

many thanks to all who replied, I finally succeeded by combining all the ideas, first I made an expanding mandrel like Peter Twissell suggested, but it kept slipping out, even when I used pliers to turn the allen key to tighten the expanding screw so then I added Gary Davidsons suggestion and...

    magnum 120 FS repairs

I have a Magnum (chinese made from japanese OS molds) 120 four stroke that needs some work, I thought being a model engine builder this should not be too hard, only to become extremely disappointed with the Magnum internals once I got it apart, the valves need to be replaced because they're...

OK then, as long as what you produce can be imported into a hobby-ist (free license) version. how about starting with CAD and drawings for the Inline-4, same geometry as the Vee-12, good for practice and a lot less machining, here are some starting dimensions cylinders are 1.125...

    Lawrence Merlin V12

here's how I drill and tap the end of the rocker arm for the tappet screw use X-axis to get correct offset from shaft, use Y-axis to get centered in the arm's width, I use a magnifying loupe to do the Y-axis visually (yes, everyone should have a pair of angle block sets!) I don't know about you...

Model Diesel: 32mm bore, 38mm stroke, indirect injection

I too obsess about cam hardness, but have found that I run my engines so infrequently that my not-very-hard 4130 cams are holding up just fine, though am switching to A2 just for the heck of it
