    Lawrence Merlin V12

body is also stainless, gasoline engines don't have the same rust problems as methanol engines, so its not strictly necessary, but I use stainless for plugs (and valves) anyway. I think full size spark plugs either do have a relief cut at the shoulder or use such a thick copper washer that it...

    Lawrence Merlin V12

its just .031 stainless wire ! we don't run our engines hot enough or long enough to cause any problems, but I do see platinum and/or iridium wire on eBay so maybe I should start a go-fund-me :-) !. one of the frustrating (but not actually challenging) aspects is grinding the back side of...

Resistor & grounding CDI ignition modules

DK, many thanks for the replies, currently up to my ears in alligators with other projects, but will get back to this, hopefully in the not too distant future Pete.

Resistor & grounding CDI ignition modules

DK, I'm not buying it, because I've seen my supply voltage swing 90 V opposite, from the primary kickback <--- that's what I'd like to see if anyone else can replicate, if a device is designed for +5V but you send it -90V I'm guessing that's a problem. Pete.

Resistor & grounding CDI ignition modules

DK, perhaps, when you have a little time, research what happens to the supply voltage to the Hall sensor during a spark (with the Sage-Gedde driver circuit), because my hunch is we're burning out our Hall sensors with the kickback from the coil primary and I'd like to see someone with a better...

Resistor & grounding CDI ignition modules

as a one time spark coiler and tesla coiler I've always said you can't have too many high voltage toys, you might be close to the limit though :-) !!!

Resistor & grounding CDI ignition modules

Wow!, now if you could apply this same level of measurement detail to atmospheric lightning we might get somewhere on that topic :-) !!!

    Lawrence Merlin V12

some photos of my 8-40 spark plugs and bits and pieces, and a 10-40 that hopefully more clearly shows how the ground electrodes are cut from the body (by hand using an abrasive cut-off disk on a dremel, argh!!!, I 8-40 drilled&tapped a holder to help holding them still while grinding, and to...

    Whittle V8

I'd agree that using spark with RC, while it has been done, is generally a bad mix. I don't think there's any holy grail here, but I'll post some photos of my 8-40 spark plugs and bits and pieces over on the Merlin-v12 thread, my ignition is the D.Sage-J.Gedde design in post 144 of A new...

    Whittle V8

Ooops, My Bad, for framing my post as a question, my V12 runs on #8-40 threaded spark plugs, there has never been an issue with them, even though I used corian insulators while I've switched to macor since then, rather I was afraid of scaling issues with the distributors so made larger non-scale...

    Whittle V8

wow, nice work all around, very inspiring !!!, but, if you're clever enough to miniaturize your glow plugs I'm pretty sure you're also clever enough to make miniature spark plugs ? :) !!!

My new project ...Small diesel engine .

I've built a working gasoline + spark ignition version of a Hansen Vertical, after I got the carburetor venturi correctly sized I can start it by hand, and at the recent Golden Gate Live Steamers show even some enthusiastic kids were able to start it by hand, but I'm now working on a true...

My new project ...Small diesel engine .

sorry about the confusion, the term "secret sauce" in this context is a euphemism for Hansen's secret designs and machining techniques for achieving a working injector and pump, didn't intend to mean a literal liquid, again, sorry :) !!! (he's making no secret about his fuel: "Fuel...

My new project ...Small diesel engine .

Peter, my plan is to document the build process here on HMEM, and sell plans at cost only since this is a rip-off of Hansen's B.E.A.Utiful design (converted to imperial). this will most likely happen before I get a true diesel working, which means its possible that one of you will figure it out...

Fabricated Ignition Distributor for 4 cy. model i.c. engine

I've always taken the better safe than sorry approach so all my distributors are 2" OD so far, haven't felt the need to experiment as they're always at the back end of the engine and don't attract much attention. also they're all clear acrylic plastic and polished to be transparent after...

My new project ...Small diesel engine .

my bad :-( its hpcgears.com !!! I had been using sdp-si.com here in USA for decades but they aren't being reasonable about a 15-T helical in this DP as they only stock going down to 20-T even though 15-T doesn't require special cutters and fits the hub size they use (they gave me a...

My new project ...Small diesel engine .

check out the youtube video of my #1 engine, also here's a photo of parts for my #2 engine, if you want me to help debug your design I'll have to know more about it ?

My new project ...Small diesel engine .

Minh-Thanh, nice choice of engine to model !!! I have built a working gasoline + spark version of the Hansen Diesel, as a precursor to an actual diesel injection version (like Hansen's its all built out of silver-brazed together sheet steel), if you're curious look for "my hansen diesel" on...

Bob Shores Model Engine Ignition Book

I have Bob Shore's book, I have wound some coils, its mostly a fool's errand, the wire is so fine that you will break it, multiple times, you will unwind and start over many times, on the other hand you can buy very small EMGO 24-71532 moped coils that work great. I have one inside the base of...

Cutting oils What do you use?

I dislike the smell of WD-40, until it starts to smoke, then it reminds me of cherry flavored pipe tobacco, which I do like (even though I don't smoke anything) :)
