Vintage generator based on ceiling fan

Nice :-) !!!, I have an old ceiling fan motor in my garage somewhere(?) just for this purpose, but haven't gotten around to it, glad to see you have :-) !!!

    Skeleton clock

I have the plans for John Wilding's "large wheel skeleton clock" (thanks to inspiration from Chris "clickspring" YT videos !) and have been looking them over and have some concerns the tick rate is (198 / 7) * (144 / 60) * 54 = 3665.828571 per hour whereas if the rate were (200 / 8) * (144 /...

    1/3 Scale Ford 289 Hi-Po

the secret to success with helical gears is to design your engine around commercially available ones :) !!! (hpcgears.com has the smallest I know of at 15-T 48-DP 45-deg, which I'm using in both my Duesenberg and Hansen engines)

    First time bevel gear cutting

congratulations on a successful pair of bevel gears, yeah :-) !!! next up try a pair of 45-deg helical gears :-) !!! I tip my hat to anyone that has the patience, persistence, and above all the ability to keep focus and not make any mistakes during a very long and error prone process. now that...

    Duesenberg Straight 4, quarter scale

speaking of "small parts", I recently ground the pair of cam shafts (am very pleased with the results I got switching to a CBN wheel but not sure how to dress the wheel once that is needed)

    First and Third Projection Symbols

I'm currently looking at a factory drawing of an IC engine head, in the center is a top view, below that is a port-side view, above that is a starboard-side view, problem is by following the rules the starboard-side view is upside-down :-( !!!, so actually very confusing, also by...

Building a twin cylinder inline i.c. engine.

I feel your joy !!!, wishing I could do as well, my only gear, a 116-T 32-DP starter ring, does have a couple "odd" shaped teeth, hoping it will work anyway !!! Peter.

    First and Third Projection Symbols

Dieter, yes, perfectly clear now, many thanks for the language translation :) !!! Peter (the only german I know is "das machined ist nitch for der fingerpoken und der mittengrabben, ..." :) !!!)

    First and Third Projection Symbols

Dieter, this is a great start, knowing that 7, 42 are standard(?) degrees for dimetric, this seems to match what Kozo uses in his book ("Penns A3 Switcher"), but what's missing are the scaling factors along the axies, suppose the part measures 100mm along the "C" (42-deg) axis, what...

    First and Third Projection Symbols

I always struggle keeping my machined parts consistent with my drawings, and have a bunch of mistakes to prove it :) !!!

    First and Third Projection Symbols

we draw the side view, then the top view above that, then the right side view to the right of that, that's the logical way. I have no idea what demon possessed the minds of the people that came up with the other way, perhaps it was the result of a "committee" decision (a choice that offends...

    First and Third Projection Symbols

Mr Green, I could not agree with you more ! "first/third angle projection" doesn't have anything to do with angles :-( and those cone symbols are just hieroglyphics :-( and IIUC its only the brits that use "1st" and they drive on the wrong side of the road if you get my drift :-( like you...

    Lawrence Merlin V12

there's no such thing as a "born machinist" (like there are born musicians, etc), we all got there the hard way, trial and error, all it takes is patience and dedication, if you have those you will succeed and be rewarded !!!

OS Gemini twin rear carb gas conversion

1/8" diam x 1/16" high neodymium magnets work fine with the Hall Sensor specified in the Sage-Gedde ignition circuit (I've been using a "us5781", you can use any sensor with a similar triggering field strength rating). the difference in field strength of various grades of neodymium magnets...

    Cole’s Corliss Steam Engine

I second Dave's advice, all flywheels should be keyed, the set screws are there just to keep it from sliding, I'll add that I sometimes use loctite thread sealant (sealant *not* locker) on my setscrews to prevent them from loosening while still being removable without heat.

Model Engineering in the 21st Century

model engineering in the 21st century is this: iron lathes and mills made in the 19th century still work perfectly well, anything with a computer over 10 years old is obsolete, unmaintainable or unrepairable, and is pretty much useless.

    Monotube Flash Boiler Design

Perhaps I'm mis-remembering, but I thought it was the result of a pressure gauge that only went up to the designed operating range of the device, so if you were over pressure the gauge just pegged at that maximum operating pressure, the astronaut read the dial and presumed everything was OK...

    Monotube Flash Boiler Design

I hope you do remember why the oxygen tank on Apollo-13 exploded :-( !!!

    Brian, don't forget the 2-cylinder radial :-) !!!, Pete.

    scaling for dummies?

would the owner of this thread please delete the non-scaling related posts :-( !!! (someone else can create appropriate threads for people reminiscing about old times)
