I like Jasonb's recommendation or silicon carbide as a lapping medium. I have decided to go with a lapping tool similar to the one on the Adrians Model Aeroengines for which a link was provided earlier today. Now I have to figure the grit I need. I am thinking 600-800. But, I am inviting other...

    Webster Build Questions and Progress

I tried the lathe tool bit "trick". I like it. My current diameter is .872". I think I will be able to get those lines out by going to .873". Finished the cylinder today, except the lapping. I figure that with the cylinder lapped to .873", if it does not work out, I can always latter lap it to...

Thank you. I like Ramon's lapping tool. Is there any instruction or diagram available? In the meantime, I intended to fabricate one similar to the one on https://www.adriansmodelaeroengines.com/catalog/main.php?cat_id=178.

Thank you. Will put a small lathe tool in mine later to see if I can duplicate what you are showing. Will report back accordingly.

Here are a couple of pictures. You will note some tool marks; but, I cannot feel them. Very smooth.

I made an aluminum "piston" and it seems like a good fit. (just checking for fit and working toward making a lap; I will not be using aluminum for the piston.)

I have done so, and it looks like no taper. I will try a photo but doubt it will show adequately.

I have already made the cylinder out of mild steel. I don't want to buy more materials. If I understand correctly, my current cylinder bore type that was bored on the lathe needs lapping?

    Webster Build Questions and Progress

Thanks, Jasonb; you have come through again with an excellent post. Need to study this for the next few hours. Thanks, Chuck. Price is certainly reasonable. Just so I understand how they work. I would think I want the 7/8" size (.875") if I were to go that route. Would it go down in size to...

Excellent point. I think I can scrounge up some C.I. for piston size. As to lapping, what should be used? A cylinder hone? Or some other appropriate tool?

    Idaho Falls to be specific.

East Idaho. Sorry, I thought my location showed that, but it only shows USA.

I don't think I will use rings. I like the idea of a close fit of an aluminum or cast iron (if I can find some cast iron stock) piston. That is how I have made my steam engines. Still don't know enough about honing/ lapping to decide what tool to use to do so, particularly with a mild steel...

At least you have "shows". It's like a desert here. No shows anywhere nearby that I have ever known.

Cylinder is done with all but the holes to be drilled and lapping the bore.

Thanks for all the responses. Good points by all. Nerd1000, thanks for pointing out the typo. I do have time, but not that much patience ;). Also, the more I measure the bore for taper, the more I am getting either no taper at all, as far as I am capable of measuring or no more than .0001". I...

Almost done with the cylinder. Fins are done and I hope the bore is done. Just need to finish cutting the end to fit the cylinder block, and of course drill some holes. I have an interim question or 2. First of all, I bored it to .7822", as best as I can measure it with a telescoping bore...

    Webster Build Questions and Progress

I have started the cylinder using "regular" steel. Coming along. Got it from 1.75 diameter to 1.5 diameter, and I have drilled a 1/2" starter hole (going to buy a 5/8" drill today) for the boring bar. The boring is of course going to be the critical part, trying to bore with no taper is going to...

I have already machined the steel I have and it does fine; but, yes, it is not anywhere as nice as 12L14. I was wondering about bearing bronze for the piston due to it's lubricity. I have plenty in stock. Thank's minh-thanh and Jasonb. Decision made. I will proceed with the regular steel, and...
