    Jet engine vs Rocket engine

One sucks and blows, the other one just blows. Nah... I really didn't type that......(grin) Steve

Finish on wood bases for Gasoline Engines

Tung oil. Perhaps the most forgiving stuff you'll ever use. Self leveling and durable. I've even applied it with my finger and still gotten a smooth result. Several coats will give you a very deep clear finish. Steve

What is your answer to this question?

Jpaul Having been the very guy you described, in my younger days, he's not hard to recognize. Directly asking if he has a question often begins a pretty decent conversation. When I spot him, I work to draw him out and get him engaged. Sometimes he/she is a kid, but they often come in an adult...

What is your answer to this question?

It can be hard to keep a straight face at times. A group of us display our engines together at local farm and engine shows. One of the guys in the group has a really nice Miser Stirling that is a great little runner, however, it usually sits on static display. At one show, I convinced him to run...

What is your answer to this question?

Anyone who has publicly displayed their engines will attest to the fact that questions are a major part of the experience. When your bladder is screaming and the conversation is showing no sign of ending, you stand there and suffer as you patiently address each question. Yes... some of the...

What is your answer to this question?

None has topped the guy who thoughly chastised me for my collection not being under the care of a museum. It turned out he has just such a museum. To ice the cake, he had his attorney contact me to inform me he had a transfer agreement drawn up and awaiting my signature. You don't want to hear...

What is your answer to this question?

Chads Welcome to miniature engines. That question and several variations of it are heard at every venue where I've shown my engines. I also get it from friends, neighbors and family My current stock answer tends to be " It exists purely to entertain me until I'm looking up at the wrong side of...

It's not like I've never soldered before....

I think you guys are probably right about the heat. The metal is super thin so I'll have to try a different approach to heat application.

Hit.... I'm considering switching to copper, but will need to check some tolerance requirements. Steve

Setting cutter heights on a lathe?

MB.... Any straight edge will do. I've also used a spare cutoff tool and it worked just fine. With as many rules as I have around the shop, one is usually at hand when I need to use one. Steve

It's not like I've never soldered before....

I've got a small but important repair to make to make things right for a client who purchased what we both believed to be a class one condition steam engine. In order to fix the problem, I need to solder an end plug into a 3/4 brass tube which will then be soldered into a threaded bung. The...

Setting cutter heights on a lathe?

Andrew I use a trick that is a very old school, but it's fast and accurate. Place a 6 inch steel rule between the cutter and the work piece. Run the cutter lightly against the rule and observe the angle of the rule. Adjust the cutter height until the rule is perfectly vertical and you'll be dead...

Bogs.... You make it sound as if your leathery old arse would be even somewhat chewable. Putting up a helpful link is always welcome but everyone has to make their own choices as to where they buy. A bit of inquiry before buying goes a long way. If I push the buy button, I made a decision and...

    A new specialty magazine?

I see some real copyright problems lurking on the near horizon. Reprinting published materials is a sure fire way to get one's chestnuts roasted on an open fire. No opinion here on whether to jump on the project or run like hell, but I'd be one to advise taking a step back and looking at it with...

    50 endmills

Easy MB.... Everyone was given more than one good report on these guys, by multiple members. Several members also reported that they not only got their product, but were pleased with the quality. If you placed an order, it was a decision you made. If you have a beef, it's with the supplier, not...

    50 endmills

Bogs is right about the Chinese new year. I made the uninformed mistake of ordering my DRO's from a Chinese company just before the holiday began, a while back. It seems everything shuts down for the celebration and you can't get in contact with a living soul. I finally did get an email from a...

Hadn't noticed it until just now, but Loose Nut is right.... no icons here either and I'm not on a slow connection. Just the default folder icons are showing for each thread heading. Steve

    Digital Caliper batteries

I've used the chinese versions and didn't like them very much at all. I'll probably pay his price to get the Energizers simply because they last a whole lot longer. I'm not all that surprised at the new prices. I'm sure his costs have grown since the last time I ordered.... especially in the...
