Putting some grip (stippling) on an aluminium drive pulley.

This is now sadly deteriorating as predicted. There is no right or wrong!!! There are just different opinions. Some people think people like Jim are responsible for nuclear disasters !!! Showing the video won’t cause a world disaster, if someone feels it needs the “Keith Appleton” approach...

Putting some grip (stippling) on an aluminium drive pulley.

Great comment, I nearly made reference to the very same moment. That aircraft had no guards over the drive chains and very little regard for crew safety........👍

Putting some grip (stippling) on an aluminium drive pulley.

Anyone ever heard of Mount Everest ? Bloody dangerous mountain. People try to climb it and some even die trying. Please be careful getting off you high horses guys. We wouldn’t want an accident !!!

Putting some grip (stippling) on an aluminium drive pulley.

An interesting thread. Many things in life have a degree of risk. Jim lives in a country that had many dangerous snakes, spiders etc. I know only to well how a simple operation with a powered tool can result in injury even when taking what you perceive to be enough care. However I also enjoy...

    Wyvern engine Edgar T Westbury

Lovely engine. Now I want to build one. I tend more towards steam but that is a joy to watch and hear running. Cracking work.

John Builds Kerzel Hit & Miss

You would need to measure the current when running on 6v and then calculate the value and power requirement of a series resistor. R=V/I

    Considering a 3 phase CNC small lathe - - - have 240V single phase

You will need as much information about the machine as you can find. A rotary phase converter at the correct rating will run it. A VFD won’t. VFDs will turn single phase into 3 phase but need to be connected to a load in order to work. The size you would need to run a decent sized cnc motor...

    Build a mini caterham

Good luck with the Caterham. A mate of mine had just finished one. About 220 BHP Ford Durertec. Crazy expensive!!!! About £40k and you have to build most of it yourself.

    Fusion 360 replacement

At what level do you find fusion impossible to understand? I can create most shapes I want but struggle with making assemblies. There are many tutorials but often they forget to explain the basics.

    Fusion 360 for a beginner

I tried Fusion for a short while and started to get to grips with it. Not sure what they have done with it now but I cannot even draw two lines that connect together at a given angle. The angle is shown as is the length but as soon as you enter a length, the angle box disappears !!! What have...

    Westbury 'Seagull'

In my trade in the UK we are not allowed to soft solder copper fuel lines in case they breach in the event of a fire. I therefore would apply the same logic to a storage tank. I have had to replace water filled pipe work that had melted joints following a fire so I know it can melt. Better...

    Westbury 'Seagull'

I would opt for silver solder on the basis of the much higher melting point. If you ever had an engine fire it might get hot enough to melt the soft solder making it a much bigger problem to deal with. It would probably never melt silver solder.

Another Stuart Twin Launch build started.

I believe one the aims of the Stuart engines is to teach you about building assemblies. Checking drawings and working out the best methods of producing the model. They have not changed a lot in decades. If they were easy then you wouldn’t learn as much. I made a few mistakes making mine but I...

    Most efficient steam engine design?

The Titanic ran the exhaust from its triple expansion engines into a steam turbine. Now that’s really efficient. The output power from the turbine was close to that of the two triple piston engines. The turbine drove the central propeller.

Feasibility of small 4-cycles in practical usage?

A four stroke also has a higher compression ratio therefore better thermal efficiency. But size for size they won’t make “more” torque than a two stroke. They will generally run over a wider rpm range with a more linear output. A two stroke tends to have a narrow power band.
