    Truing the chuck super easy

John, glad you approved my decision. I got your point in an earlier post. I even got one of these Keats angle plates. Looks like something handy to have lying around. I am indeed hunting for accuracy, so I will explore that soft jaws thing. I will attend the University of YouTube on the subject...

    Motorized milling machine head

I did order this motor. 120W, 500rpm. Variable speed. Hope it's powerful enough. At 500rpm the torqe isn't all that high. I plan to make a joystick with direction and adjustable speed. Hope I will manage...

    Truing the chuck super easy

OK.. this is how this issue was somewhat solved. I got a new 4-jaw self centering HBM Chuck from RDG Tools. I also bought a MT4 alignment test bar to check the spindle. It was within 0,04mm at the spindle and about 0,07 at the end. Not all that bad I believe. I dismantled the new HBM chuck...

    DRO, another solution

I have just finished my DRO mill installation. After searching the wild west web for numerous installations I really didn't find any help for the X axis of the kind I got. I found a solution and thought I would share it with you in case you want something similar on your mill. I bought a 3-axis...

    Farm Boy 651

Brian, cutting a piece from a steel tube and make a center of aluminium was a nice idea.. Getting castings from US over here is costly.. However, the task is about to be solved. A friend of mine shal cut some pieces for me.

    Farm Boy 651

David, pity we are on the very opposite side of this globe.., otherwise I would be on your doorstep begging for some steel :-). However, hope you will make a thread of your build too. I could need someone to seek advice from. 20mm steel is of cause ok. Do you plan to make the flywheels heavier...

    Farm Boy 651

I have started to plan my next build, a Farm Boy hit’n miss engine. Plans are purchased and the serial number is 651. Looks like a fun machine to build. Lot of machining. I am wondering about how to source the material for the flywheels. They are some substantial chunks of iron. 1x6” blanks are...

    Motorized milling machine head

This s exactly how I imagined the installation should be. Except, I want considerable more speed.

    Motorized milling machine head

Good idea Petertha. However, the item in the link wasn't available any longer.. Based on the test i did with my powerfull 18V cordless drill, in first gear it produced 500 rpm (I measured with a rev counter). It really had to strugle to manage so I assume the power needed is relatively high at...

    Motorized milling machine head

Thanks for suggestions John and Herbiev. Very close. Hovewer, I tested the speed when I operated it with my cordless drill. It was 500rpm. That felt like the right speed for fast moving of the head. So if i get a 500 rpm motor with variable speed I could make a joystick and have it all. So I...

    Another Stuart 10V

Thanks for the credit guys. I'm inspired. After all, I'm new to this. As I have told I'm s sucker for accuracy. I think making this engine as good as I can is a part of the hobby. However, since I never have got any education or previous experience with lathe and mill, I have done a great deal...

    Band saw upgrade

Kerrin, that base extension was a really good one! Ill do that to. Agree, the fixed wise is crap. With the small wise attachment and clamps for larger works we probably won’t need the original wise very often. However, the “counterweight” screw will make it usable for more than...

    Another Stuart 10V

I have made new crankshaft bearings for my engine. I was not happy with the accuracy. The clearance was a bit too large and the engine had a slight knock at high speed. Actually I think these parts where the most difficult to make on the whole engine. Not just to carve them out, but to find a...

    Motorized milling machine head

Deeferdog, I didn't think of it that way.. However, I often set the head as low as possible and do the fine adjustment on the quill, and locks it. Fine adjustment on the head would do both. If I make the motor with variable speed I could actually make it. Herbiev, yes, this is probably what I'm...

    Motorized milling machine head

I want a permanent solution and I will relay on the motor only. So the crank can go. I don’t need fine adjustment, the quill has its own handle and even fine adjustment hand wheel. The head is just for coarse settings. I made an adapter yesterday to fit a cordless drill to the 15mm round...

    Motorized milling machine head

John, my mill is probably smaller than RF45. When I think of it.. I have an old powerfull Snapon battery impact wrench. Maybe the guts in it could fit the bill. For fine adjustment I use the quill handle and crank. The head can move pretty fast.

    Motorized milling machine head

Nice conversion deeferdog and good ideas guys. My crank is large and the force you need to crank it is relatively large. I have been thinking wiper motor, but I doubt it is powerful enough, and a bit slow. What I will do next is to install a gas lift cylinder to take off the weight of the head...

    Motorized milling machine head

Thanks DJP. Maybe a power window motor will do. I could make some kind of counter measure to the heavyer upwards cranking. It's real crampt behind with that crank. And it takes all day to get it moving. The travel on the quill isn't all that long, so it' a lot of cranking.. My shop is newly...

    Motorized milling machine head

Anybody having an idea for a geared motor suitable for replacing the hand crank to move the head up and down the column on my milling machine? (Sorry for the possibly wrong term. I'm from Nowhere (Norway :-). BTW, the mill is the one over by the window. I believe about two rews per sec. would...

    Band saw

I was looking down that route my selves Wesley. However, I did not find any reliable information on using a wood band saw for metal. So I upped the stakes and went for a horizontal/vertical metal band saw. It's a low cost Chinese type, but I'm impressed with it. It cuts trough massive steel up...
