Made the head. Not any difficulties. The valve guides/seats are more critical. Turning the pocket and guide hole in one operation to ensure accuracy. The fit to the holes in the head is 0,03mm oversize if I managed to measure right. Pressed them in with the wise having a sleeve over the guide to...

    Farm Boy 651

Made my first ever gear today! Can’t remember I had such fun since I got the line bore right. It was not difficult at all. I have to rush in and say, this is not a precision gear. But for a slow turning hit'n miss engine? I recon it will work. I made the tool to my best ability by copying...

    Surface plate

Many good alternatives to make a surface plate here. Anyway, this is what I ended up with. A “big” slab og granite. After searching the net for plates no suppliers could send such a heavy (56kg) item within reasonable costs. This one however, is coming from Chronos Ltd Engineering Tools in the...

I managed to make the crank absolutely true. No measurable run out. However, when it was time to fit it in the frame, I had a real fight. I struggled to get the frame line bored straight. First I tried to bore with just a 13mm drill since I have no reamer at this size. I can't believe how...

Made the crankshaft. I went for the pin and rod approach. The shaft is 10mm silver steel (drill rod) and I left it as is. The webs are cold rolled steel. I made them equally sized pieces and Locktited (603) them together and drilled them as one to ensure the two holes being parallel. I actually...

So I finished my first engine...

Beside an 18 cylinder radial engine, this one actually shows! I love the design. Is it your own? Rudy

    metal bandsaw improvement

Like your mods! I have a similar saw my selves and have learned that this is a very nice tool to own. I would guess you like my mods to. Especially the fast removeable table has proved to work very well. You can easily add that to your table plate too...

    ENV aero engine project

Wez1, needless to say, this is world class model engineering.. Hand down.. Drop dead gorgeous.. I would like to see more detailed pictures of this project. Regardless the result and level, I'm inspired whenever someone tries this hard and do their best.

Acute table and Diamond tool holders

Kerrin, I actually also bought some of those parting off blades. I have always (since I got my lathe last year) wondered how to part off without chatter or other nasty behavior from my HSS blade and carbide part off tools. However, tried the blade from Eccentric yesterday and it cut like any...

Acute table and Diamond tool holders

Got a package from Australia a couple of weeks ago. So I will attend to this before I continue with the Farm Boy project. It's a small side job and I want to put it to work. We are talking about "Diamond Tool holders" and the "Acute Tool Sharpening System" from Eccentric Engineering. Both...

Glad you like it guys. I enjoy this project very much. I'm so eager to see this engine running. Being new to Model Engineering it is a very good feeling when you mastering new challenges. Guess it's like when athletes are winning something. Anyways, what I can say so far, to someone considering...

(Discovered I had posted some pics before). The crank bearing caps was LockTited (603) on before drilling. This ensured a very good fit when the screws goes in. Had to heat it to separate. The two-piece frame is screwed together with several screws and LockTite 603 instead of fewer screws and...

The engine frame material arrived. Nice lump... Good to have a band saw for this. Tock an hour to eat through. There is a lot of right ways to setup the work on these parts. I tried several and found my ways. Since it is the first time I do such machining, I have to go slowly. I got my selves a...

    Crank material

I’m well into the build of my FarmBoy hit’n miss engine and is about to do the crank. The plans cals for tool steel solid made. I was hoping to make it with silver steel (tool steel) rod and webs of bar stock. I can’t easily get the materials, so I’m wondering if cold rolled steel for the webs...

    Another Hoglet!

Like to see the progress on this. A v-twin is something I want to build my selves, so I will stay tuned. Rudy

my first steps into the world of model engine building was a symple steam engine.

Hi Gerard. Grate little steam engine. I like bras engines. Pretty material and very pleasant to machine. Hope you finish it with or without the drawings. Rudy

    Bob tail caliper

Herbie, I actually got one. Bought it to measure tyre treads. When I look at mine I don't have the confidence in it to bring it into the shop doing 0,01mm measurement. 0,1mm is probably ok. And that is also ok for many applications. Wish there was one in metal. Rudy

    Bob tail caliper

Yes, you are right. However, looks like it doesn't have the depth gauge. And it's 4". Still too long to put upright in a small mill (which has limited purpose anyway without the depth gauge). With the calipers I have, which is probably a copy of Mitutoyo? is actually very accurate and stable. I...

    Bob tail caliper

My calipers are not very expensive at around $30 from China, (But they are good). Got an extra for the purpose. Cut it on the grinder. There is no need for the support strap on the backside over the depth gauge rod. Because it's so short it stays in place. Othervise I would just wrap something...
