Stuart boiler HB4 with noisy ceramic burner.

Mecanicboy I recognize this phenomena from my propane terrace heater. After a while it started to make noise like a ram jet, but still burning behind the ceramic element. This was caused by false air leaking in behind the ceramic element, making the mixture wrong. This leads me to believe when...

    Slow running 4 stroke

Hi Guys and Gals, I’m closing in on my current project and my mind is already searching for the next. I’m thinking an old style, open valve train 4 stroke. I want this engine to be the slowest running engine imaginable. This calls for design features that aids these properties. From big engines...

    Grasshopper table engine

Interesting design. Is this an actual model? Has it ever been full size engines of this kind? I'm still learning about steam engines and love everything old about them. So the history goes hand in hand with this hobby. Rudy

    Hi from the northeast!

Love your story ShuttleX. I'm sure you will like to be in here as I do. I'm felling very welcome and everybody is so incredibly willing to help out and share their experience. This is really like a High School, a social club and entertainment in one. It would be nice to see some pictures of your...

    Z-axis motor

Drew, Thank you so much for sharing this document. Not just any note, it's propper documentation! I have not yet got around to do my modification, so when I do, I will for certain study it in detail. I'm one year into a two year marathon work project that consumes most of my time, så I haven't...

Thanks frazer. Did´t think about that! I´m not that good at doing eggs either. Rudy

    My first boiler

goldstar31, compared to my Stuart 10V, I'm thinking something like a Twin Victoria as a "big" engine. 1" x 2" bore, stroke. I had no problem making the ends on the boiler glow red with my large Sivert propane torch, so I guess It will be sufficient. If not, I have two. I was thinking of how the...

    My first boiler

Thanks for sharing your build John. This is absolutely a beauty and you have good reasons for celebrating. I want to make a bigger engine and a coal fired boiler after this. Your boiler design is absolutely something I will look into. Do you think it is OK to solder with a big torch instead of...

    My first boiler

OK minh-thanh. I will put up som scetches as I make the parts. Stil a lot of things to figure out. Keep in mind this is my first boiler. However, I have done some homework. Read a lot of threads here and watched Keith Appelton on YouTube. Rudy

    My first boiler

Actually the rivets are just for show, just cut to length and silver soldered in place. The soldered end caps is strong enough to begin with, but silver soldered rivets are probably as strong as if they where peaned on the inside. With flux in the holes and on the rivets the solder flowed fine...

    My first boiler

Hello my model engineering friends, I’m finally got around to start making my first boiler, for my first build, the Stuart 10V you can see in the background. Surprisingly amount of work involved in a boiler. Starting to understand why internal combustion engines got popular. I have no plans...

    Farm Boy 651

Hi Bruce, Glad you sorted it out. Can't remember if I had any problems. Anyway, if you want some measurements or other advice, I'm more than happy to help. At the moment I'm trying out the propane demand valve from Howel. It works, but doesn't hold back much pressure from the gas bottle. Need an...

    Z-axis motor

Drew, I will certainly keep you in mind when I start this. Today the start of a 4 week holly day is the main focus! It feels good to have something to look forward to when the holly days are over. I might go the whole way to CNC one day. That's why I wanted to do this Z axis motor compatible for...

    Z-axis motor

Thanks Drew, for the update. I have a good chance to select the right parts now. Surprised that the 4.5Nm motor is so powerful. I have never owned such a motor, but from reading around it looks like people are using a relatively big motor on the Z. My mill is a bitt larger than yours though. It...

    Big Earls Farmboy #758

Earl, on aluminium you will always need a good etch primer, and the surface must be sanded down and cleaned thoroughly of cause. I have tried the regular non etch types with bad result. I bought a rattle can with primer, so it's not two component as normally used in car paint shops. Guess there...

    Big Earls Farmboy #758

Grate job Earl! I also considered leave it unpainted. Pity to cover up a good finish. However, when I had the green glossy finish, I was happy with that too. I also considered shrink paint to simulate a rough casting. Rudy
