Attention! Rancid with other word hardened and unuseful grease in semi-universal dividing head BS-0, BS-1, universal dividing head BS-2.

    Mark's Bernay Engine

This is a link to the drawings on this forum by Rich Carlstedt. USS Monitor Steam Engine Drawings There are other drawings that are somewhat like the original engine and probably far easer to build but I would like an engine that replicates the original engine as much as possible. Mark T

Yes. Thanks for reminding me of that one. I have the drawings by Rich Carlstedt. The drawings are for a full size engine and will need to be scaled down and adapted for model making. Mark T

    Mark's Bernay Engine

Here are the valve linkages. This project is almost complete now. Next up will be the valves and a board for the base. After that I will make the steam manifold and then make a video. The end is near, always a sad day. Normally I have a new project lined up but not this time. I have a lot on my...

I hate paint and seldom use it. I did use some high heat paint on this model. I prefer to use natural textures and aging of the metals Mark T

Yup still have them and still use them. And I still have my safety wire pliers. Spent many years working as a licensed A&P mechanic before switching to marine mechanic where I could make good money. Ended up owning and operating a small boat manufacturing company. (both the boats and company...

    Torch question

Hi For large boilers made from copper you will probably need an oxy acetylene torch. For smaller parts I use a mapp gas torch, sometimes two of them. A ceramic insulating blanket helps hold the heat in. On this page you will see the blanket in use. 1.75 Minnie traction Engine Mark T

A new attempt at making piston rings

When I made George Brintnell's Holt 75 George talked me out of using o-rings and suggested the Timbrel method. I heated my rings to a little over 1100 degrees F for an hour in my foundry furnace and let them cool over night in the furnace. They turned out well and I had good compression even...

A new attempt at making piston rings

Did you rough up the cylinder bore. O-rings require a polished surface, cast iron rings require the bore to be a little rough to wear in the rings. Mark T

    Mark's Bernay Engine

The sun has been out this week so not much got done on the Bernay. I did complete the Eccentric and the eccentric strap. The original plan did not have a shaft coupler so I added one because an engine needs a way to transmit its power. My phone was dead this morning so I used a different camera...
